Vw Beetle 2 Litre Engine ??

Featured Replies

Daughter is thinking of doing a deal on a second hand Beetle 2004 , but it has the 2 litre engine . Does anyone know what this engine is like , ie fuel , reliability . Any comments please . Thanks  om

Its the 8v 2.0 litre standard to a lot of VAG cars. Its very boomy and rough when pushed and not very economical. I had it in my VW Bora and managed 19mpg around town

Its quite problematic in the beetle as with other VAG vehicles, quite a few running issues with failed lambda probes and cats (£600) being fairly common.

The 2.0 8v is old technology. Old technology is not always a bad thing when it comes to reliability but that doesnt apply here im afraid. Avoid like the plague.

Its old technology, that bit is just fine. the problem is they have tried to drag it into the 21st century with alot of emission gubbins and it dont really work.

My Ex had a 2003 2.0ltr in Daisy Yellow............... it was very unreliable..........:thumbdwn:

Sounds like Ford with their 1.3 OHV engine. First introduced in 1978 and still in use (c/w catalytic converter, electronic ignition and fuel injection bolted on) until recently. Ford actually got away with it too with it last being used in the Ka. They must have built millions of those engines. On that scale it probably cost them £100 a pop too.

I hear tell that the engine is good enough to see off the 190+bhp offerings from BMW and Ford though so it's not all bad :rofl::rofl:

Chris

Its only 115 hp. How does it out perform a BMW with 190 +????

Best ask Mil and Thirdtimelucky - I'm baffled too! :D

Yes what gives? It's petrol and non turbo so tuning is seriously restricted. I sense some sarcasm in the air

Thirdtimelucky

Ahh but he has an AmD remap dont forget.

It's capable of some surprisingly amazing performance.

In threads posted on here, that is.

Rob.

0-60mph is about 12 seconds. Look at the Aerodynamics of the thing!

Bug off Chris.

I've never had any problems with my car, it's been very reliable I tell you. 3 years and I'm happy with it.

And performance wise, how do you compare something off the size of a minivan with something as big as a Polo, sharing the same engine.

Boo to you all.
