Weird starting glitch

Featured Replies

Hello, I've got a 2009 VRS and it has a starting gremlin.

Long story short, it will bump but won't start on its own 90% of the time. Battery is fresh and charging when the engine is running. Starter has been swapped twice! Otherwise it runs fine.

Garage assures me all wiring has been checked thoroughly. It makes one "tick" sound then silence.

Anyone had anything similar???

Has the starter solenoid been checked for continuity when activated? The 'tick' is the typical solenoid engaged sound but doesn't mean it's making good contact via the starter terminals.

The mechanic said the solenoid was incorporated in the starter, so therefore would have been changed???

Not sure but there maybe a relay involved with starting. If its failing it would explain the one click. Not sure if its in engine compartment or under dash. Think its mared 449 but not 100%

Dodgy cable/connection on the main feed wire?

Or same on the engine to chassis earth strap?

Thank you for your replies. The saga goes on! The earth strap was identified as an issue and has been fixed. Drove it to the shop. No problem. Tried the next day. One tick, nothing, then it started on the 4th twist. Now it's dead again. I bloody love this car and this is driving me nuts! Some random dude suggested there might be 2 earths? Is that correct?

Maybe a new ignition switch. Did find this on here.

It turns out its got 14. I think theres another to gearbox etc as well.

Blimey! Thanks for that.

Good luck finding them. I would start with any near starter.

I guess that's the next logical step. Thank you.

Not sure if its possible but have you tried a live wire to starter solanoid direct from battery. Touch it to terminal that ignition feeds. If it turns over the fault may be ignition related. If it doesnt then its either a bad solanoid or earth.

It might be worth checking/replacing relay for starter. Sorry not sure exactly which one but I believe its inside under dash somewhere or in engine bay fuse box. For some reason its difficult/impossibe to get a diagram of where and what each relay does. Someone on here will know the correct one and its location etc.

It's just started with no bother at all... 🙄

All suggestions appreciated though
