Rust on wheel hubs

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just picked up my 2024 Kodiac Sportline 2.0 TDI (200) 4/4 yesterday, and I noticed that all 4 inner wheel hubs are showing signs of rust.

Just looking for some advice / support to use against the garage when I speak to them to get something done about it.

I guess it's not so rare, and will probably get worse over time

maybe they can be rubbed down and a protective coating applied ?

tks

Hi,

Yes it is quite spread over almost all VAG models. But not an issue if only a 'surface rust'. I fear your dealer won't propose anything about it, because I guess, they'll most probably say it's only normal wear.

If you want them nice again, you can buy a Foliatec Brake Calliper Paint Set in metallic grey. Then remove rust with sand paper, degrease hubs and apply paint. Of course, don't forget to mask what doesn't need to /shall not/ be painted (discs' braking surface, callipers, pads...).

Some people here have made it, it gives nice results. I personally intend to do it. I've bought the pain set at the end of last Fall, but it was too cold to do it. I then have to wait for milder temps...

I'm guessing you're on about seeing this with the wheels on the car? In this case, what you're seeing isn't the wheel hub, but rather the brake disc hub. If you Google 'brake disc bell', you'll see the part I'm on about - although on your car you just have a hub, as a brake bell is for fancy lightweight two-piece discs.

Anyway, it's nothing to worry about and is perfectly normal. My vRS is maintained to within and inch of it's life, and all the hubs are a bit minging now. I give them a clean every six months or so with some strong iron fallout remover, however there's not much you can do for an OE disc to prevent it happening. It's just surface rust.

To fix it in the future, you've got a couple of options. The easiest one would be to buy brake discs that are coated black - the braking surface will wear, but the hub will remain black. You can also remove the rust, but it will then be bare metal, which will then oxidise again even faster! You'll want to paint them, as above, but remembering to use some specific high-temperature paint - brake discs get hot!

It annoys me too, but it happens to every car. Once they start to wear even more, you'll start getting little rings of rust around the very edges of the disc. It'll happen on the rears first.

Thanks Bap and Occy

yes it's the brake 'disc bell' - a photo attached

1 of them is rust free (lucky ?) the 3 others are quite rusty/unsightly

So I guess I'll rub down and paint them, assuming I can't get the dealer to do it.

Just found another problem - broken plastic trim passenger side centre tunnel

-photo attached showing broken lugs

I think they should replace this foc, but I'm worried now why they had this off before ?

(car only done 10,200 miles)
