1.6TDI Musings How Reliable?

Featured Replies

Hiya folks I’ve been considering upgrading to a Mk3 Octavia as I’ve had a fair few Mk2’s now and I’m thinking the 1.6TDI might be the route I go.

What’s the general consensus regards the 1.6TDi?

I’m mainly from the era of earlier PD lumps like the 1.9TDi which as we all know are uber decent but these more modern dervs being common rail et al etc do seem to be hit and miss.

Is there anything specific to look out for that the 1.6TDi suffers from? Eg are injectors, DPF’s, EGR’s still quite a common issue? Do they suffer anything that’s particularly drastic like cracked heads etc?

Just doing a bit of homework before I start the used car hunting.

TIA

Nick

As always depends how its been looked after, mines on 142k, no real issues, Thermostat, a glow plug, an ABS sensor, electric water pump and a corroded brake hose in 10 years (plus consumables) a mate has 200k on his, still original DPF, EGR, Injectors and Turbo.

The Silca bag seems to cause issues with the heater but i haven't had these.

Might be worth hooking an OBD reader on it and seeing whats going on, check the DPF Soot/Ash levels?

The weak point would be crank seals, seem to leak slightly with regularity.

Are you considering a manual gearbox or DSG?

Look for the Service history / proof the Cam Belt and water pump has been replaced.

Mines only done 70K, so not had a hard life by any means. Had cam belt and pump done at 8 years old, doesn't use any oil between services, no oil leaks, DSG faultless.

All major engine components original. 60 mpg average.
