Skoda Octavia 3 (2016) - Infotainment suddenly stopped working

Featured Replies

Hi guys, first time poster here!

Had our Skodia Octavia Estate for just over a year now and it's been great with no issues at all. However a couple of days ago my wife went to use the car and for some reason the Infotainment system just wouldn't start up. The touchscreen came on but displayed the analog clock / screensaver that normally goes away when you press the power button. Tried pressing the button to switch it on but nothing happened. Other features of the car can trigger the touchscreen such as the parking sensors etc. but I cant use the audio or navigation features. When I use the "virtual cockpit" screen to browse to the Audio/Nav functions it shows the message "Infotainment system is switched off". The head unit in the glovebox is a 5Q0035874B (no CD slot, 2 SD card slots) and I have the touchscreen with the physical buttons around the outside, not the touch ones.

Things I have tried:
Holding Power Button for 10/15/60 seconds
Removing the Nav SDCard before turning the ignition
Checked Fuses for Infotainment and Touchscreen
Checked that the wires are all seated correctly in the back of the Head Unit and the Touchscreen
Removed negative terminal on the battery and left for a few minutes

Nothing seems to be working! Any advice would be super welcome.

Got it booked in for a diagnostic session (£160 just to look at it!!!) at the dealer but they have no slots for 2 months, got a few long drives before then and they wont be fun in silence 😂

You'll probably find it will all work again when you go over a bump or hit a pothole....

I had a similar intermittent issue with my previous 19 plate Octavia, the info screen would turn it's self on and off intermittently. Sometimes it would last 3 months without doing so, then it may turn it's self off a few time a day & back on again. I found the only thing that seemed to reset it for a while was taking the fuse out from behind the glovebox, I replaced it with a new fuse, even though the old one looked OK. I never got to the bottom of the issue, I now have a 20 plate Octavia (facelift), not done it once, touch wood.

Personally I wouldn't touch a dealer, I'd ring around a few independents, see what they say & how they'd cost to have a look or an good auto electrician.

Hope you get sorted.

Thanks for the advice, will pick up some new fuses.

Took it to the independent garage down the road that had access to VCDS and an OBD scanner. Unfortunately neither showed any errors at all. It actually started working for a split second, saw the Radio screen pop up but went off again after a few seconds.

Got it booked into a VAG specialist independent for Friday to hopefully dig even deeper

Strange update.

So I bought some new fuses at Halfords, tried them out and no luck, same issue as before. However then my wife called me whilst I was in the carpark. My phone still automatically connects to the Bluetooth in the car and when I went to answer I realised the infotainment system switched itself on!! Whilst I was on the phone I could browse all of the menus, and it was working absolutely fine, all information displaying fine etc. However as soon as I hung up the call the screen immediately returned back to the Analog Clock Screensaver...

Thought potentially I could update the software whilst on the phone, but think that might be a bit risky and also want to be able to show the garage on Friday.

Solved!

Literally just gave the power button a hard wack and it switched on 😂

Must just be a dodgy button. Worth replacing/easy to replace?

I would personnaly change the screen

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey everyone, I'm having the exact same issue! Screen won't turn on, but is fine when I get a phonecall or go into reverse. I've tried the hard reset, and the "whack" method that worked above, but nothing so far! Any other solutions?
