suspension creek/squeak on passenger side

Featured Replies

Hi all

there is a creeking/squeaking sound coming from my passenger side suspension every time i go over a bump

when the car has been driven for a while it gets a bit quieter but is still there. when i park the car up and push down on the car panel to make the car bounce a bit, you can also hear it.

any idea what it could be

cheers

J

One area where you get get this noise from, especially in colder weather, is the front suspension top mounts - they are "rubber" and just sit in an inverted cup at the top of the struts, not much can be done if that is the issue, I've considered applying talc to the top mounting to see if that improves things - but as it is only happening in colder weather and at the start of journeys, I've not moved on that idea.

Next is the lower arms rear mountings, they can tear as they are voided, and that will tend to keep making noises even when the temperature increases.

Last, there is the top gearbox mounting, depending on which version is currently fitted, replacing it with one for the TDI if you have a TSI can improve things.

moved not oved!

Just another thought, to check if it is the lower arm rear mounts, park the car on level ground, out of gear and with the handbrake on firmly - now grab each of the front wheels and try to rotate them, one at a time, using your hands - if you get the same sort of noises and the wheel moves back and forwards within the wheel arch, then I'd suggest it is the lower arm bonded mounting(s), easy to replace - well relatively easy.

awesome cheers for this, will try that tomorrow when im back from work and update you

I've bought some 'atp automotive AT-205 RE-SEAL' to try to spray on what ever 'rubber' bits I can get at without dismantle, might take two goes as it's so noisy on my wife's 2015 and has been for a good few years now. I don't drive the car that often but when I did two winters ago on a cold day I was shocked at how loud it was despite having heard it for years previously in better weather.

Some owners spend a lot of time and money trying to stop the noises and aren't successful and as my wife's car was looked at by IIRC the Dealership and an independent garage and they found nothing of concern I've left it as my wife is used to it and has the radio on, it is useful as a reminder to go slower for the raised humps and 3rd-world roads we have anyway.

Neither is anything mentioned at any of of the MoTs - other than the front dampers that the Dealership claimed were leaking (at 6 yrs/41k-miles) so fail MoT very expensive replacement by them and the new 2yr-warranty were leaking 11 months later at a service and pre-MoT check by an independent that was used just that once. Back to Dealership for under warranty replacement and they said the dampers were only "misting" which was normal for them (VW ?quality?) and Mot pass without advisory. Following MoTs by (a different and better than previous) independent garage puts the "misting" as an advisory, as they told me they know about the dampers VW fit and would never use them offering better at vastly lower supply and fit cost.

HTH.
