Coolant Problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am looking for some advice. I have a skoda fabia 2001 1.4l comfort model. I have only had it a short while so don't know exact details such as when the problem started. The water in my car needs to be refilled very frequently, sometimes only after a few hours of driving. The only leak I can find is shown in the image at this location (its 700 mb so if you want me to post another lower res picture i'd be happy to).

The hole looks machined and as if it should be there. Is it just that the thermocouple in this location needs replacing or is this a sign of a bigger problem? Any advice here would be great.

Thanks

Haven't a clue what that bit of the car is, maybe the water pump. Maybe a cap/plug has come off.

I had a Chavalier that went through a tank of coolant every 3 miles. It was a knackered water pump (on the **** they run off the timing belt).

Get it checked ASAP. No coolant = engine melt. Also - if the pump is on the timing belt & seizes - it's an engine rebuild.

Looks like the themostat housing is holed , dealer should be able to sort it out , or D.I.Y. doesn't look to bad a job todo , just remember to do it cold and refill with some antifreeze

Thats the thermostat housing. Id change that and also check the rad fan switch in the n/s bottom corner of the rad.

Thanks for the help guys!

Bought a replacement thermostat with casing and fitted it. Turns out the hole is meant to be there, water just shouldn't be flowing out of it in large amounts. Looks like the last owner had a problem with the thermostat and replaced it with another one which was broken too (presuming the first one was). Some plastic clips had broken which held the spring and water was running through the gap out the hole. Anyhow, no more coolant problems and the car is running fine now :D.

Phew - I had a coolant leak a few years back and the guy replaced the head gasket - Luckily it was all on warranty...
