Back plate, rear brakes

Featured Replies

Hi

Just had one of my rear backplates/splash plates come off due to corrosion. Has anyone replaced these, wondering if it can be done without removing the hub. Looked online and it seems it has a smallish circle in the middle which makes me think the hub might need to come off. The one that came off has just rusted away.

Anyone!

Think the front are replaceable without hub removal but rear require hub off. My old mk2 was the same. Horrible squealing noise and when I tried to push backplate away from disc it disentegrated. Never bothered replacing it as the other side was missing. Didnt cause me any problems without them. Was going to do it if I had to replace a bearing but bearings outlasted the car which died due to corrosion.

Thanks for that, I had a horrible feeling the hub would have to come off, thank you designer/engineer. Think I probably wont bother then, the other side seems ok. They are only about £15 aftermarket so I might get a pair for if the bearings need doing, intending to keep the car for a good while if poss'

Mine's the same. Is it an mot failure?

Mine just fell off the other day, with a horrible graunching noise. Did you mean would it fail without it? I don't know I would doubt it though.

Have had cars pass MOT for years without them. As long as the discs are good and brakes work it should pass.

Both my front ones on my karoq have come off in the last year. Passed the mot last week with no mention of them missing, and car was serviced at the same time and it wasn't mentioned during service either. Therfore o would say do not worry yourself about them being missing.

I did have one fail once as the front one was badly coroded/loose and not held on by much. The MOT guy said he wasnt allowed to remove it himself but if I ripped it off he would pass it.
