Superb MK3 2020 ACC/Front assist sensor "Sensor impaired

Featured Replies

Hi guys, quite a while since I've had to post something.

Driving home yesterday and the Adaptive cruise control stopped working, got home and checked it out on the stalk and in the menu which gave a warning triangle saying "front assist not available" in the menu screen and on the dash, similarly the ACC said similarly "Sensor impaired".

Checked on the web and this model year was a transition in 2020 so the sensor is behind the centre of the main grille, not behind the open grille below the reg plate. I did find a post for that on an older mk3 Superb

Could be that the plug has worked loose or the unit has worked loose, I believe it is a Bosch unit, my problem is I can't access it through the top cover, took the two torx screws out it won't budge.

The two in the photo with a "?" are rubber and won't come out, they may hold the plastic frame that the sensor fits in.

The third one near the top of the main grille is a bung and can't see what it's for.

Any ideas anyone? I'd like to take a look before running to a dealer to get it sorted

Cheers Terry

Hi Terry, my son recently had same issue on his 2021 Superb, he had driven over some bumpy roads and got the same caption. We couldn't get to the radar unit from the top, so took the front bumper off, a few screws but quite straightforward, left all electrics connected. Radar unit is secured to the back of the grill in the centre, it was all secure, electrics sound. Refitted bumper and Carried out system reset using OBD 2 plus pro VW package, all ok since 2 weeks. Follow YouTube "ACC Calibration at home" some guy recalibrated it on his Audi. When we checked our radar unit the Vertical Angle was reading 1.743, max is 0.8 degrees. Skoda along with many other manufacturers have this recurring problem, it doesn't help matters fitting the Radar unit on a plastic flexible front bumper trim. There's lots on You Tube. Hope this helps!

Hi there, after I'd posted the problem this morning, I found more help on this forum eventually.

The answer believe or not was to clean the sensor on the rear view mirror that looks forward, which I always thought was to auto dip your main beam for oncoming traffic.

I was a bit sceptical but went out to the car, started it and the warning triangle was still there, switched off and cleaned the small square translucent sensor started up again, went through the motion of switching on and off the ACC and the Front assist, it started working s went for a short drive and everything worked perfectly.

I can't explain why that sensor should have anything to do with the ACC and Front assist.

I'll have to find that post again, it was from about 4 years ago, one thing I did find was that the front centre of the grill is a separate piece and can be removed but I'd not like to try it !

Also not surprised about it being out of alignment with all the potholes and some pretty severe road humps.

Thanks for the reply

For future reference to get the cover off you would have to remove bumper. Pre facelift had a couple of holes you could poke a screwdriver through to release it.

Thanks for the the replies guys,I read one post where the bloke said, have a go at taking the cover off, if it does break the clips, just order another cover, it's easier than taking a bumper off and refitting it, especially if your on your own, his post was from a few years ago, and said it cost £13 for a new cover, who knows how much now?

And why change it from the pre face lift which was far easier? bloody sadists these designers 🤬

I'm dreading when stuff starts giving up the ghost on this car, front and rear led lights, info system screen, 101 sensors on the car, and most of the stuff you can't do yourself, so labour costs are a big part of the problem.
