Further down that slope!

Hullo

Merry Boxing Day to everyone.

Hopefully, in the morning, I'm going to be going into Exeter and get Protyre to rip my cat off my car's exhaust and shove a powerflow pipe in its place. I'm not sure exactly what the result will be TBH, the main thing I'm hoping for is a bit more pickup that will push my official BHP just a smidge over the 150 mark.

Anyway - if it all goes ahead I'll report tomorrow. :D

Would be very interested to see the results Jason. Take some pics if you can!

I've been trying to do some research on this decat thing. Some have warned against it (saying you lose back pressure and performance possibly) while others are in favour (Mike at Jabba being one and he knows what he's talking about)

Its something i'm very interested in doing too!

Hmm. Interesting Matt.

I thought that losing back pressure was the whole idea - i.e make the whole thing more free flowing to the tailpipe.

ANyway - Mike used the kind of car language that even I  understood, so I do not believe there is any way in which this mod can have a negative effect on the car.

To say you'd lose performance is a little far-fetched... It would be like your trumpet mod making that pipe MORE restrictive to airflow.... :D

I don't really understand it either Jason (perhaps someone could put me in the picture) but it seems that sometimes engines might need a certain amount of back pressure in order to perform properly. Again this is what i've picked up, so dont ask me why. :(

Basically i read about a guy on SCnet who fitted a powerflow decat and freeflow back box. He lost power! :(

Here is the post I made on SCnet.

Well...

I've tried to spread some queries about. I'm going to say something controversial like Seat exhausts are different, which is why that "rage" person had a drop in stats - maybe the rolling roads were different. There must be other factors other than the de-cat which could have caused the drop (temp, fuel, etc)

I've also posted on tdiclub to see what the Americans reckon.

Some back pressure is required on a N/A engine.

But im pretty sure the more free flowing the exhaust on a turbo the better.

Alhambras had a habbit of busting the exhaust of the turbo/downpipe. Went like **** off a shovel afterwards, just sounded like a tank...lol

Nice positive comments there, matt - didn't have you down as a MkIV Golf forum viewer, but I guess lots of importnat VAG info can be sourced from these types of places. :D

If I find protyre are open and OK to do this tomorrow, I'm gonna do it - no messin', lets 'ave it! VROOM!

Now then..... This throws up another interesting quandry.. should i spend my xmas money on 1click.. or put my name down for a miltek zorst? :blinker:

if miltek do develop a system, it will fit normal tdi fabias, mk4 ibizas, and the mk6 polo GT (if it comes out) too wont it?

would anyone be interested?

Get either of them, because once you have that you will go and get the other. This slope is very slippery you know.:)

Ahem - gonna be a while for the de-cat. The factory the powerflow comes from ain't open until Monday, then it will take a short while to get to Protyre. Hope to be de-catted for Wales, but won't honestly care if I'm not... :D

Jason,

Is this a part that is just bolted in place of the existing one, or does it need to be welded in?

Has this cat replacement already been developed then for the TDi?

As far as I know all that is done is they'll look at the pipe's profile at each end of the CAT section and assuming they're both the same diameter/profile then a bit of symmetrical pipe, not sure what it's made of, is put in the section the cat would normally occupy - This is about as much I know myself TBH.

Thanks Jason,

Going to try and find some pictures of a tDi cat....
