shattered glass

Featured Replies

hi all , first thread . my business partner and i have owned an octavia estate since sept 02 , which we run as a taxi . untill now we have had no problems at all . yesterday i was sat in the car outside my house , engine turned off , when there was a loud noise came from the rear window , i instantly thought some lunatic had thrown a brick or something at the car window , it was shattered totally with a large hole in the middle , looked round not a sole in sight , also no brick , rock ,spark plug ,nothing at all , as i was standing there wondering what the hell had happened , an old boy from down the road passed (ex mechanic)and said that it looked like it had gone from the inside because all the broken glass was on the floor outside , with hardly any at all in the boot ,(dont know if his theorys correct) has anybody else experienced anything like this before , or does anyone have any bright ideas what might have caused it ? thanks in advance andy

if the glass is outside then it seems like it broke from the inside out no idea why it happened though if you were stationary if still under warranty try taking it back to the dealer and say the glass was faulty

Did you have the rear de-mister switched on?... there was something similar with those little rollerskate smart cars, the rear windows would shatter because the demister was making them too hot....

sounds morelike a 0.22 air rifle.. if all the windows were shut it is possible for the glass to blow out..... got any local sniper kids... assume you are not in Gaza?

Somebody I spoke to through work had this happen to his Audi estate. Again no apparent reason for it to happen.

The thing is, Audi have no replacement rear screens in the UK and he is going to have to wait a couple of weeks for a new one! So its either a common problem or Audi needs to shoot someone. :(

thanks for the prompt replys lads . probably going to go down the route of faulty glass , it is still under warranty , dont know how far i`ll get with it though . the heated rear window was switched off , on the dash , and also the engine wasnt running or the ignition on . with regard to the air rifle that was my second thought after the brick etc .( i dont live in gaza , quietish village small town ) must admit i seriously thought TAKE COVER ......te he . thinking about it later though would a 22 air rifle do that much damage ie 8 inch x 4 inch hole , more like a magnum but then surely the front seat or possibly my head would have been missing !!!! thanks again andy

thats interesting regarding the audi , will certainly be mentioning that when i go back to the garage tomorrow , we phoned one of the national glass companys within half hour of it happening and were told they would fix it between 6 and 8 last night . phone call 10 mins later couldnt do it till monday dinner time coz nearest rear window was in inverness !!!

The same thing happened to me in a new Mondeo when I worked for British Car Auctions - but it was the drivers window and right next to my head - scary stuff.

We put it down to temperature differences/condensation as the car had been sitting for days - started and driven through the ring by me then back out into the cold.

Although the air rifle idea was sw=eriously considered as thw BCA site is just behind several blocks of rough Glasgow high flats - niiiiice.

The rear window on my Estate went when a stone thrown up by a mower hit it, and it then slowly disintegrated into the boot. As the rear window is simply bedded onto a 1/8" plus bead of sealant, it is unlikely that it is subject to the sort of body stresses/flexing the windscreen can suffer from. Very strange that one should shatter and the pieces fall outside the car.
