Hi my daughter's 2015 Fabia's battery seemingly died and it appears I can only get an EFB at short notice (the MOT's due in 1 day), how soon do I need to get software changed, if at all?

Are you sure the original battery is AGM... They are usually quite expensive and not normally used a original equipment. I'd therefore guess the existing one, if the car has stop-start, will be EFB already.

Thanks but it's a Halfords AGM027 so guessing someone upgraded it at some point.

Ideally as soon as you can, use something like Car Scanner ELM OBD2 to register the new battery, and change the type back to EFB if needed. Be surprised if it's actually been registered as AGM in the first place, they probably just slapped it in - which may well be why it's died.

As above, if you have an ELM327 obd connector you can probably check and change it with Car Scanner app on your phone.

If not ask the garage that does the MOT to do it for you as they will probably have the right kit to be able to.

I used a generic wifi ELM327 dongle that cost me £6.50 in 2016, worked perfectly fine. If buying new now, I'd probably go with one of the Bluetooth ones recommended by the app: Choosing OBDII adapter – Car Scanner ELM OBD2

The Vgate ones are about £20 on eBay.

1. Install the new battery, making note of its technology and capacity in Ah.

2. Start the car to ensure it actually works, maybe do a 10min drive.

3. Install the Car Scanner app on your phone and upgrade it to the pro version.

4. Plug the ELM327 dongle you've bought into the car's OBD2 port, turn the ignition on (no need for engine to be running) and connect to the dongle with the app.

5. Code the new battery's technology and Ah (if different to currently stored) in the app. I don't think manufacturer matters.

6. Roll the battery serial number on by one - this is important, as it ensures the car knows to reset the battery management system.

7. Close the app connection, turn car off, job done.

8. Optionally, reconnect to the dongle and double check the current battery details are showing as you just set them.
