Long charging cable

Featured Replies

Die to distance from my home charger my regular cable is 12.5 metres long. Occasionally it will charge 5% and stop. Unplug, replug and get another 5%. With my regular yellow cable never any problem. Has anyone else had problems using other than the supplied Skoda cable.

2024 Superb PHEV.

Is this an extension cable you are using? If so, what gauge (mm2) are the cores?

Not an extension cable. A commercial EV charging cable from my type 2 home charger. 12.5Metres long.

Is it correct gauge (mm2) for the current used while charging?

Length of connecting cable can become an issue if its cross-section is too small, problem becomes worse in longer cables through increased volt drop.

Hi Warrior, the cable in use is 3 cores of 6mm and 2 cores of 0.5mm for the signals.

What is your cable a 7, 11 or 22 KW Type 2.? I have used my 20 meter 22 kW cable to charge PHEV,s from wall boxes or 11 kW AC 3 phase chargers.

What is the max. Amps output of a type 2 charger - 13A?

Standard wallbox chargers are 32 amp single phase as far as i know.

Thanks, I must have been thinking 'granny' cable.

I never call granny charger, but yes the 13amp cable is a granny cable type 2. The charger is onboard the car not the cable. 3.6 kW sometimes. Wall box a different kettle of fish. 22 kW type 2 cable in long lengths are quite a heavy bulky thing. My EV is charging at a public charger just now using one. I will be just over 3 hours to get 20 kWh of electricity. Costing £10.50.

My wall box charges at 7kw. Don’t know the rating of the cable. Size marked on it is 3*6mm + 2*0.5mm.

Best find out if a 7 kW /11 kW rated or a 22 kW. Likely 7 kW. Edit. My shorter 11 kW cable. Came with my EV.

6.0mm flexible cable is rated at around 32A/7.4KW - but voltage drop can become a factor on longer lengths.
