HorsePower and Torque

Featured Replies

On several occassions i have noticed people with A certian amount of horsepower. Lets take, 185 hp! some have 280, 300, 315, 320 amount of Torque.... If the boost is raised to the same horsepower how can the torque levels always be so far out?

iirc when Jabba remap the VRS they can adjust the torque level to protect the clutch from slipping and also move the power further up the rev range

Power is effectively torque times engine speed. If you measure power in bhp and torque in lbft then power=rpm x torque / 5252.

As such one car may have 320 lbft at 2500 rpm and another 260. Lets assume the torque of the first car drops away quite quickly so that it has 'only' 220 lbft at 4000rpm it will have 167 bhp. If the second maintains it's 260lbft right to 4000 rpm it will have 198 bhp. It's not the torque it's where you have it!

You learn something new every day eh?!!!:P

If you're talking RR print outs then its probably losses. A certain wheel torque at a certain revs must equal a certain wheel power. Engine power and engine torque are a different fishy kettle, they are at best based on measured drivetrain losses which of course vary between cars, at worst they are guestimates and are dependent on the load on the rolling road.

185bhp is your peak horsepower figure. You need to compare the graphs and you'll see where it develops this peak power affects how much torque is produced. The best remap is not the one that produces the biggest power at a single point, but the one which produces the most power over the most rev range (ie the biggest area under a dyno plot) :D
