Where has the SDI gone

Featured Replies

Really pleased with my Fabia SDI....but no more on Skoda site ....where has it gone, and why?

the SDi was replaced with the 1.4 TDI

Reasons I can think of would be that the 1.4TDI is probably faster or roughly as fast, more frugal and lighter. May also have lower emissions but I havent checked :)

That said, the 1.9 SDI should last well, no turbo to go wrong :)

The SDI engine is very good (should see 200,000 miles) but VW decided the agricultural 3 cylinder was a better option! 1.4TDi is a very unpleasant driver no power then some power (it's a very labourous (?) task driving a car powered with this engine), at least you knew where you stood with the SDI.

I'm a former SDI owner of several years!

We have just bought a 1.4 TDI and I find that it pulls very well. Far better than the 1.9 SDIs that we tried before buying it. I like this engine a lot as I feel it has plenty of go for a 1.4 and I also like the 3 cylinder engine note. I definitely wouldn't call it agricultural, no more so than any other VAG TDI engine any way!

There are now two 1.4 TDI engines in the Fabia. One is rated as 70PS which replaces the SDI and one at 80PS which replaces the 75 PS which we have. Both new engines are Euro IV compliant.

thanks for all the SDI replies.... I'm glad I have a 1.9 robust 4 cylinder rather than a weaker 3 cylinder plus turbo to go wrong!

i wouln't describe the 3cyl pd tdi unit as weak! they are a good reliable and very economical little engine. i had a polo 6n2 with one of these engines and it had over 180k miles on it when it went.

i change mt avatar quite frequently. i was looking for the car from the sweeney.

and i've allreafy been slated for for signature as well today!!

I part exchanged an SDI with 59000 miles on the clock (owned from new) for the 80BHP 1.4TDI in March and have now covered more than 6000miles in the 1.4TDI.

I always keep accurate refueling records for my cars and my journeys in Norfolk and Suffolk are basically the same now in the TDI as in the SDI. The SDI pulled better 'four up' from standstill than the TDI which needs revs and the SDI was very tractable with it wide torque band - a very pleasant car to drive - but the TDI wins hands down for mid range acceleration / overtaking. I am very disappointed by the consumption figures for the TDI. The onboard computer is very inaccurate and tells me I am averaging 59.5mpg but in reality I am only just getting 54mpg. The SDI was FAR more economical (forget all the official government figures) and was returning a true 59+mpg when it had 6000 miles on the clock. When I sold it at 59000 miles it was giving better than 60mpg at every fill up!!

The recent What Car article about inflated fuel economy claims by some manufacturers confirms my own findings with the 1.4TDI. They listed a VW Polo fitted with the 1.4TDI 80BHP engine as achieving 54.5mpg (similar to my own finding) rather than the claimed 61.4mpg.

Norfolk Skoda

I have driven both the 1.4TDI and 1.9SDI, and have to say that I much preferred the SDI. It doesn't accelerate as fast but I found it to be much smoother. It was also a far more relaxing car to drive.

The vibrations and noise from the 1.4 were also awful! The 1.9 units are quite noisey, but no-where near as bad as the 1.4.
