Tdi 110 engine troubles, please help

Featured Replies

Hi folks, my dad has a number of problems with his L&K 110 tdi,

1. It does not start immediately, needs to be turned over for 5 seconds or even have a second attempt!!

2. It has an occasional missfire in second gear at arround 2000rpm.

3. Very occasionally the turbo does not work when the engine is hot, by turning the ignition off and leaving it for 10 seconds and then restarting it all is back as it should be.

Their are no warning lights on on the dash and fuel eccon. is not affected!

Any advice from those in the know would be greatly appreciated.

The car is a 2002 with 62 k on the clock.

Thanks in advance

Tom

i'd find someone willing to put VAGCOM on it to read any fault codes for you

No3 I would have thought is a sticky turbo.

1. It does not start immediately, needs to be turned over for 5 seconds or even have a second attempt!!

[Is it from cold or hot when its difficult to start? If cold check fuse going to glow plugs or the relay that switches them on. You could also have air entering the fuel supply, check for leaks in the system[/B]!

2 It has an occasional missfire in second gear at around RPM.

Just misfires in 2nd gear....Not every gear at 2000rpm

]3. Very occasionally the turbo does not work when the engine is hot, by turning the ignition off and leaving it for 10 seconds and then restarting it all is back as it should be[/i.

This symptom points to a ecu/sensor problem, get a VAGCOM check done.

I have an Octavia TDi. Recently, when starting from cold, even on a warm day I have to turn it over two or three times for atleast 5-7 seconds to get it going. I have changed the glow plugs but no joy. Any suggestions. Help!

Air in the fuel line for the first start problems even when warm

A bit of vaslene or similar on any joins in the fuel line will allow you to locate it. My first port of call would be where the pipe connects on to the Fuel filter.

What exactly do you mean by a misfire on a diesel?

Hi chaps,

The missfire is more of a hessitation and then a splutter if you know what I mean, the turbo problem seems really irratic now , you can go for days with no problem and then it will do it a couple of times in an hour or so!!

The starting problem is just from cold.

Thanks for the replies, will look at the fuel lines for leaks this evening.

Sorry should have clarified, does it only do it the first time you start it after sitting there for a while (even in warm weather).

Yes only when stood a while ie over night. The ambient temperature does not effect the condition.

I'd be 99% certain of air getting into the fuel line.

My turbo can be fine for a week or two, and then just give up the ghost for a journey....

The car is back from its check up, faults showing on VAG Com were as follows:-

cold start temperature sender, causing the starting issues, this was replaced there and then.

Air mass meter was causing the hesitancy and occasional missfire, on order to be fitted later this week.

The turbo fault was as you chaps described and they said they will strip and sort it as and when my dad requires.

All in all my dad cannot talk highly enough of this relatively new firm.

They are called.' A&A motors ( Yorkshire ) in Anlaby near Hull. tel 01482 508600

cheers

Tom
