Windows security centre

Featured Replies

I have windows xp home edition with sp2.

I also have norton internet security installed.

I've recently ran spy bot search and destroy for the first time and its picked up 3 items re windows security centre as attached.

My security centre does not appear to be on although windows automatic updates are working.

Should the security centre be on?

If so how do I turn it on? (I've tried restarting)

I don't want the windows firewall on though as it may conflict with the norton firewall

Any ideas

Thanks

Um, depends which part of security centre you mean. If it says that the Windows Firewall is turned off, then this is ok as Norton will be taking care of it. If the auto updates are turned off, then this is preference but I have mine set to automatic.

As part of the nortons set up you would have been asked to select Nortons as the only security centre to be actively telling you things in order to avoid conflicts like the one you want to avoid with windows firewall.

The Spybot has just spotted that the windows security centre is deferring to nortons and it should not pose a problem.

It's probably worth telling spybot to ignore this for now.

Norton.....Aghhh. Never again . Slowed my computer right down. Will NEVER use it again. I now use AVG. Excellent

Likewise, biggest waste of time and money ever!

Another vote here for AVG. We have changed from Sophos Antivirus in work to AVG (Yes it's that good). Do yourself a favour and bin anything you use by Norton.

I`m currently using Mcafee security centre.....

only because it came free for 18 months with

my new Dell seems quite good except for the antispam part...

in spite of playing with the settings I found I was losing quite

a few e-mails ... so have disabled the antispam and now delete

the spam ( 5hite ) manually :( .... previously I was a norton user on

my old w98 machine and cant say I had any problems over the

last 5 yrs .......... anyway Mcafee was offering a 50% discount

if I renewed now ........ but seeing as the 50% off made it about

thanks for your comments i will try to get spy bot to ignore.

I used norton as I used it before and it kept my old pc free of viruses etc. It did slow the machine down but it was an old machine anyway (1999) and I had system works on it too. Things are much quicker on this one that I havn't noticed it really cutting in as I open word etc. I wanted to be up and running when the machine arrived so took the norton option rather than the mcaffee - had bad experience on a previous machine trying to get rid of it.

I did think about zonal alarms as I used the free version many years ago for firewall but at the time I wanted something all dancing so went the norton route.

Maybe when the norton sub runs out I may try out the zonal alarm suite including antivirus but then I suppose at that stage I will have the problem of divesting myself of norton unless things are easier to remove under xp....

i get the microsoft security warning in Spybot after a scan , i just ignore it and close Spybot , i think its something to do with the Microsoft update checker that checks whether your version of Windows is a genuine copy

Norton... Norton absolute ******* crap! it came with my new pc and was fine on dial up, the minute we went Broadband the problems started. I persevered with it and even renewed my subscription (not knowing any better) by this time I had gone through a ream of A4 and one print cartridge trying to do all the different things I was advised to do and got nowhere  . I E-mailed them telling them I wanted my money back only to be told that they would only refund me after a 60 day period had elapsed, when I told them that in todays modern communications systems of instant banking that this was not good enough, as they could take my money instantly so they could damn well refund me instantly, they stopped answering my e-mails.

I now hate Norton with a passion. At the time I was able to get McAfee f.o.c. with AOL and it was a revelation by comparison, absolutely no trouble what so ever it runs its checks and gets on with its job unobtrusively.

Sorry rant over, don't do it, don't go back to Norton, its just not worth the grief.:orb_upset :orb_upset :orb_upset tears will flow.

i'm running Norton , and have never experienced any problems whatsoever , also running Spybot, Adaware and Zone alarm , dont have any problems with these either , maybe i'm just lucky
