Faulty fresh air fan & alternator ?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Got two faults unless anyone can see a connection.

1 The interior fan on my diesel Felicia has packed up - started going intermittent now stopped completely but occasionally stutters into life, usually when turning left or driving over uneven roads. Have had the dash out and broken then remade all the connectors and still the same. Does this sound like a motor fault? I'm thinking it may be the motor brushes worn down but I'd imagine it's a replacement motor I'll need. Anyone had a similar problem and have any advice please?

2 Have a loud squeeling / scraping / rattling from the region of the injector pump or alternator after starting sometimes. Sounds like a dry bearing or something but clears after half a minute or so and doesn't happen again. (I noticed the battery light glowing first time I started up after putting the battery back on when I was looking for the fan fault, though this hasn't happened before that I've noticed.) Would this perhaps be a failing alternator or extra drain on the charging circuit? I'm hoping it's not the injector pump. (We've just done a round trip to the highlands of Scotland and back from the midlands and the car ran fine all the way.)

Again, any advice gratefully received. Thanks for reading my essay:)

have you checked that your's actually getting a live feed to the fan? if you are then it is probably a worn out motor, going over a bump is somtimes enough to get it spinning if the motor is worn. have you tried spinning it with your hands to get it started?

Tried spinning it but no joy. There is end to end movement of the spindle so this maybe explains how it starts when I go left. I'll put a test lamp on it and see if there's current. Is it the two wires in the connector on top of the motor?

Had a slack drive belt suggested for the alternator but it doesn't sound like a sqealing belt to me, more of a scraping, chattering sort of thing...Still I'll try that too.

Thanks

yep!

The brush springs in the fan motor corrode and break.

Try using a screwdriver or piece of wood as a stethoscope to listen to the alternator.

It isn't a mis-fitted/loose side and undertray that's catching the engine when starting it?

Searching for something else, stumbled on this old one again. I never said thanks by the look of it unless the thread got truncated.

Cheers for the advice, it turned out to be clogged up brushes in the heater motor which has been fine ever since. The noisy alternator was the clutch in the pulley wheel. Garage replaced it and gave me the old one as a souvenir.

Thanks

Oh, can you clarify this one please, never knew they had a clutch on them. Do you mean the pulley on the alternator has some kind of clutch, or one of the pulleys on the engine block has a clutch?

New pulley required?
