Access to 'AUX' inputs on Ambiente radio?

Featured Replies

Hi. Recently bought a 1.9TDi DSG estate. Good so far!

Radio menu has an option for "AUX" input (which automatically detects any input, e.g. from MP3 player, and plays it through the system). But the front of the unit has no jack point for the aux input source! I'm told this will be on future models, but I can buy an ipod connector kit at a cost of nearly 100 quid, plus fitting! (I can buy an entire mp3-capable radio system for less!)

All I want to do is get access to the back of the radio and the aux input connectors, so I can plug in a lead from the mp3 headphone jack into the aux input connectors (I'm happy to control the mp3/wma player itself, not from the radio dash).

Can anyone tell me how to gain access to the back of the radio without: (a) damaging the facia; and (B) distrupting any settings by disconnecting the unit by mistake?

Thanks.

There is no connector on the back of the radio. New models of the stream head unit can play mp3's directly from the single disc head unit and they have the aux input you mention enabled with a socket in the jumbo box (provided you spec the jumbo box). I have my mp3 system connected via an aux input adapter which plugs in in place of the autochanger on the back of the head unit. Obviously you lose the autochanger if you do that though. I had to butcher an aux adapter for a symphony head unit and get connectors from skoda to do it but now its available with the correct connector for about £45. The only thing to be careful about is that the input is quite low so you need to connect to your mp3 player lineout as opposed to its headphone socket. PM me if you need contact details for the guy selling the adapter. Removing the radio is dead easy but you need to take care not to damage the aerial input. Start with opening the ashtray, reaching in and pulling off the ventailation/radio plasttic surround. It's tight at the top so go easy. Then remove the 4 torx screws and pull put the radio. The screws can fall down inside the radio easily so place card or something below them when removing them or use pliers to keep hold of the screws.

Johnny - I need to check my diagram when I get home but I think there is an Aux input on these radios. I assume that is where they now connect the Aux In Jack found on 2007 models.

Ah right apologies. If the car has the post 22 revisions then there will no doubt be a connection on the head unit unlike the older units. I doubt it's a standard 3.5mm or phono connector tho so you may need a specific skoda connector.

Here is a pinout diagram of the Radio's -

Plug C Pin 11 Input signal audio +ve

I am assuming these are the ones they use.

These are for a low quality mono input from a hands free phone kit. This input becomes active when the hands free kit grounds out the tel mute connection on the radio and it's not suitable for anything else. I use it with my Parrot CK-3100. The stereo input you are looking for will require connection to Left, right and ground so thats at least 3 pins (or 4 if the ground connections are separated). You are on the right connector though as the other similar connector beside it is reserved for the autochanger. I think plug C is used for all pre-in and pre-out connections from the Head unit but I haven't yet bothered putting an oscilloscope on it to identify the pins yet.

In conclusion. If it doesn't actually say Aux L & R and GND then you will have to go to Skoda to find out which pins to use or buy a connector lead from them (if available). I wouldn't hold out much hope of finding out the revised pin out from Skoda though as they don't like their customers DIYing in cars still under warranty and I personally had no success.

Johnny I'm afraid I have to differ with you mate, the telephone is connected as shown below.

Plug C Pin 6 - Telephone input signal, TEL-

Plug C Pin 12 - Telephone input signal, TEL+

Plug A Pin 11 - Mute (telephone mode)

However I will agree that it is only going to be a medium quality input, but when derived from what's probably going to be a headphone socket what more could you expect.

The four pins I've detailed in these two posts are the only ones assigned in Plug C

I have the document ;)

Oops sorry, I'm confused but that is very interesting. I assumed it was the TEL IN connection you were referring to. Should have checked the pin no's I guess. If its a mono input on the pins you mention, its still totally hopeless though and not worth the bother IMO. It's also not the same connection used for the 'aux' plug in the jumbo box because that's a full stereo decent quality input.

When you say 'assigned' do you mean they are the only pins there or that they are the only pins that are labelled? In mine all the pins are there but not all labelled. Despite this it doesn't mean the unlabelled pins do nothing. I suspect for example that some of them are pre-outs for the optional 12 channel speaker system amp that's now only available if you opt for the Audience HU.

I have just reviewed the info again and I can confirm that -

a. It says that 'The plugs which are not specified, are not assigned.'

b. The optional amplifier, located under the passenger seat in RHD vehicles, only uses the four speaker channels for input.

That being the case where do you think the Jumbo Box Aux Plug goes to then?
