Disheartened over remap trial..

Featured Replies

I finally bit the bullet yesterday and got a *free* 5 hour trial remap from a well known tuning company. I had it installed at Fontain Audi in Iver; Bucks, and was there for about 30 minutes whilst the guy checked the car over and then installed the map...

..and what can I say.. its probably the most disheartening thing I have ever done to my Octy vRS .. :( Here's why..

I was a little sceptical at first and was really just expecting it to feel a 'little' faster and pull a 'little' harder, and coming out of the garage and onto 30mph roads stuck in traffic didn't really do much to make me think otherwise.. but once I got out of the traffic and had a chance to 'explore the change' I pretty much instantly changed my mind! The difference it has made to the driveability of the car makes me feel like I did the day I first drove the Octy having originally swapped over from an NA car. The increase in torque makes an impressive impact through the gears and I've found that I can be a little more gentle with the accelerator to up the pace of the car quite significantly. On my normal, 25 mile motorway drive to work I'm also pleased to say that there is no significant drop in fuel consumption either, despite some 'testing' of the in gear acceleration. Its brought a whole new smile to my face and a totally renewed appreciation of the car..

..and that's the problem... the car feels soooo damn good, that once the 5 hours is up and the mapping reverts to the 'normal' 180bhp / 173lb/ft torque, I'm going to be counting the hours until I can get up to another well known (though this time custom) remapper and get a permanent map done *sob* !!

You might just get used to the remap... I've got too used to my one click and need to spend more money to get a custom remap done now... once I'm used to that then I'll have to start doing stuff that's far too expensive!

Be warned. Your car is now running a lower powered remap and NOT the original map. This *could* have warranty/insurance implications.

Its OK, you can tell us its a Revo ;) They're the ones who offer the 5hr trial.

Eh? You've confused me (and believe me, it dosn't take a lot).. lower powered remap?.. Typo, or am I missing something?

I wasn't going to mention names until I had a proper impression of the product from start to finish, but I know its not hard to figure the company out... and I know most of you guys have already been through remaps and the like but for me its a whole new kettle-of-fish.

After the remap, your car will revert to revos interpritation of the standard map, NOT the map the car was running before the trial.

Warranty was mentioned, because the remap will still be present in the ECU but disabled, and anyone with the right tools will be able to see it there.

Her eis how the Revo remap works.

The original map is removed from the car and stored on disc at the remapper's facility. Then, 2 new maps are loaded into the car. The first is the high power map that you experienced for 5hrs - the second is a Revo version of the original map.

The power levels for this second map will be approximatly the same as the factory map but it *could* still be seen as a modification.

If at all worried, contact the people who gave you the trial and ask them to re-flash the factory map back into the car.

If you're planning on a custom remap soon, I wouldnt be worried about ti as th ecustom map will overwrite the low-power Revo.

However, if in the future you want to go from your custom remap back to the factory one you wont be able to do it at the custom mapper (Jabba ?) because the map they will have sucked from your car will actually be a revo "stock" map.

Hope this makes sense.

Yeah, perfectly clear thanks. I wasn't aware that that was the case but I am now... I had 'assumed' the map just reverted to Skoda standard. Hmm.. this has put a dampener on things..

Dont worry about it at all. Call the remapper and ask them to reflash the original map back into your car - they are the only ones that will be able to do this as Skoda dealers dont have the kit to do it.

Like Goochie says. Call the mapper and get your stock map reflashed.

what you can do if you want to keep your map yourself is buy a kwp2000 flasher of ebay. This will let you download and upload maps to your ecu. So you can download you stock map (when you get it reflashed) then when you get your custom (say jabba etc) you can do the same. Then you can switch between your maps whenever you want.

Are these kwp2000 flashers a known quantity though? Do we know anyone that has used one ?

I guess it must be just like a one-click.

Briefly read some stuff about them over on tdiclub. Think the tuners used these a few years back. They dont work with the newer ECU like the octy II etc. Think Micky 32 uses one for uploading the maps he gets from poland to his mkiv golf.
