1.2 sport or 1.4 tdi ?

Featured Replies

If you are doing a lot of short journeys (ie. stop-start driving) then a diesel makes by far the better choice. Diesel engines cope much better with this type of driving and are a lot more efficient in this situation.

Surely it's the other way round as a diesel will not have the opportunity to warm up and run at maximum efficiency on a short journey, so you will not see the higher mpg figures quoted unless you do longer trips? It will also mean that in the winter the cabin takes forever to warm up!!!

I agree with chris here, diesels take 5 miles to heat up where petrol take 2 miles..... please pay attention to my earlier post..... you will find it makes sense for the driving the creator of this thread does.... though I love diesels and regret the day I got a petrol, logic instead of heart must speak here.... I do recommend the 1.2 as town driving and 5000 miles a year means it will take at least 6-7 years to pay back the diff.

Alternately the idea of getting a second hand 1.9TDi 100bhp is a excellent idea, and should be considered a great compromise in this case :D I will be going for the 100bhp, if my VRS dreams are thrawted :D Basically though you will not get the full benefit of economy until 5 miles have been done and the temp is up to leval, the initial cost is lower then you were willing to pay out so there is a sort of biest logic here but might save you pennies over time.

I still say the 1.2 is the optimum choice in this case though :D

thanks everyone for the help.my work place is about 3 miles from where i live so i think i better forget the 1.4tdi.i would love the VRS as well but too much for me.

if i do need a new car i'm also looking at a used Honda or new kia Rio (i heard u laughing lol).

i'll see what the skoda dealer offers me for my car and what deal on pcp he can do.

thanks again

james

good luck with this mate :D I am sure you will be happy with what you get :D

What you are forgetting is that diesel engines are very efficient the instant that you start the engine (the fact that they take ages to warm up is a sign of their high efficiency). Petrol engines are not efficient at all until they are fully warmed up. This is why most vans are diesel.

If you plans to do lots of short journeys then a diesel makes much more sense. I would not be suprised at all if a 1.4TDI is twice as efficient over a 3 mile jouney than the sport.

Here we go 1.4 tdi full tank £40 and range 655miles

dsc00005sr7.jpg

i've done 400 miles and it still says i have 235 miles left not bad considering it was 400 miles of motorway driving (70mph) and around town (lots of stopping and starting)

With aircon for about 200 miles

I say tdi!

lets not forget, irrelivent of the speed of the 1.4 TDi, it can have another 20-30 bhp by spending sub £100 on a tuning box, then you'll have the power of the 1.4 100bhp 16v petrol/1.9tdi 100bhp but the economy of the 1.4 tdi.

Come to think of it, if your only going to be driving 3 miles to work and back each day, would it not make far more sense to get a bike or walk? If I only had to go 3 miles to get to work I certainly wouldn't use the car.

intresting, 20 - 30bhp for a
20-30bhp may be a little optimistic ;) It's typically 20-25% increase which should see you at around 90bhp :D Have a look on eBay for them (search for skoda tuning box).....

Chris

yeah i thought it was a little to good to be true, still 90ish is better than 75 :)

Yet another vote as an ex/current 1.2 12v owner prefer the spec of the mid range comfort/ambiante model myself though, but sport is a great little package in itself.

i work shifts 6.30am -2.00pm then 2.00pm-10.00pm

also i work in the middle of bradford city centre so for safety sake i'll rather have a car.

I don't see why your shifts make a difference, but I can understand from a safety point of view.

Whilst waiting for the vRS to turn up I had a loan of a 1.2 sport, the car was new and only had 700 + miles on the clock, I would guess that most of this was short journeys and that the computer had never been reset. The computer was showing iirc an overall average of low 30's mpg and this was born out by my own calculations over approx 150 miles- most dissapointing. Allthough the vRS as done some longer jouirneys it is still averaging 46 mpg to date.

At P-A

To get to work I have to drive approx 1.2 miles ie 2 and 1 half miles a day, to walk it takes 20 mins, to cycle 5 mins, me lazy never, my time is precious vRS 2 mins  Seriously who wants to arrive at work wet thro? who wants to do 8 hours then walk, cycle home? not I was the cry!

Could of been ragged for all of the 700 miles

Had my 1.2 12v returning 37+ on most occasions im not a light footed person (18 yr old in London... heavy footed :D )

I know I didn't rag it, didn't want to have to put any petrol in the thing to be honest so was trying to be economical, I know the 1.2 I gave my dad last year was doing mid 30's for me to and from work, think he's getting mid 40's now but he only does long journeys (90 mile at a time) at 56 mph and the odd shopping run, carries a bit of weight round tho, mum, walking frame/wheelchair etc

must be down to how each engine has been worn in. Mines done 19k and still feels to be lostening up (or will be when back on road lol:rolleyes: )

custom code 1.4 tdi produces between 100-115 bhp but it costs

It's a decision only you can make - drive both and see which you like

we have a lupo 1.4 tdi with a tuning box (cost me £50) 97 bhp and 162 lb/ft rolling roaded it goes like stink huge economy and very few gear changes from 60 in 5th it pulls as well as my octy vrs. we get 400 miles on a tank full (about £26)

Now thats no way to talk about your mother.........

will get

If you're not doing many miles anyway and haven't had the current car for very long why don't you just get it repaired?

Even if you had a replacement engine fitted you'd be looking at less than half the cost of the deposit on the new sport.
