Speedo Reading

Featured Replies

Went for a scoot out last night & ended up covering around 170 miles. I borrowed a TomTom to guide me to my destination, and discovered something quite astonishing....

The speedo on me Furby vRS was reading 70mph. TomTom was telling me I was doing 65/66mph. Am I right in thinking the speedo is set that slow? Has anyone else noticed this, or should I get it checked at the dealer?

They all do that and I doubt they'd recalibrate it for you :D

Normal, its the same with all cars to some extent. ;)

They all do it.

Yep... mine does it too.

The speedo isnt set slow, its set fast.

at least if you decide to fit bigger wheels/tyres with a larger rolling circumference they you dont have to worry too much!

My freinds had GPS systems in his cars for the past 3/4 years (he gets through alot of cars through Boredom) He's had many makes and models and they have all read higher speeds than the GPS.

you've also got to consider the accuracy of the gps too, they aren't exactly brilliant somtimes!

Decent quality GPS is +/-1mph. Speedo is -0/+10%. That's why 2 GPS (such as sat-nav and road angel) in the same vehicle always agree with each other yet two cars at the same speed do not.

I remember overtaking some car with a large digital speedo that I could read while driving our Fabia. My speedo read about 78mls, the other one 72. Most speedos are set a bit fast...

Not always. When I compared 3 GPSes in my car, TomTom came out consistently the slowest.

Just bought a Road Angel compact and get the following...

30 RA - 32 Speedo

40 RA - 43 Speedo

50 RA - 54 Speedo

60 RA - 65 Speedo

The speedo consistently reads around 7% over. They're all the same - built in to compensate for different tyre sizes and wear and tear on the various components.

All things considered I'd rather have a speedo reading a couple of miles over than a couple of miles under and the associated fine.
