Help needed with vrs purchase

Featured Replies

I just cant make up my blooming mind

I have been offered an Octy vrs mk2. It will work out £6.00 pounds a month more than im paying now for my 2.0 tdi sport + £10.00 per month more for insurance. I know that dont sound much but im already on the edge as far as spending goes but im so tempted:D

The vrs is a 55 plate and comes with the 18" alloys rear leccy windows and duel climate but my car is also well speced with sat nav, xenons, duel climate and privacy glass. I love the tdi I have at the mo but its reaching that time in its life when its going to need some money spent on it ie service + new tyres (all four !!!).

Apart from loosing my sat nav the most important thing on my mind is the fuel consumption. I used to have a MK1 vrs and got rid of that quite quick due to the amount of petrol I had to feed it. It was a shock to my system because I had a furby vrs before that, it just seemed like I was forever in the petrol station. at one point I saw 15 MPG on the computer

After reading the thread about "new vrs MPG" and based on what ive heard in the motoring press the new vrs does not seem to bad. Is it really that much better than the old model? I know its a performance car and it wont be as economical as the tdi but I just need to know its not going to dislocate my wallet.

Thoughts please.

no..its worse than my mk1

average 20-26 round town..never had it above 36mpg on the motorway (but I have not yet made a trip of above 20 miles in it) I would expect on a trip of longer miles that economy would improve

I have had it very close to 40mpg on a trip to morrisons on our coast road but thats slow and straight

performance is a big leap though

Mine is far better than my mk1

Mind you i dont always drive like a looney........... our average is 31mpg which i think is excellent.

Short journeys and traffic kill the fuel consumption in the 2.0T though......

If you are fuel conscious then it might not be a very good idea...... although how many other 150 mph cars give these figures?

maybe I just drove my mk1 in a more restrained fashion?

I certainly have a lot more confidence in the mk2..cornering feels so much sharper with front end grip really hanging on..front end generally feels lighter and sharper to point in the direction you want to go, or perhaps I like the punch right the way through the gears!

I would hazard a guess that your fuel costs would go up about 75% (swmbo was on £20 week for 110 tdi now on £35 week

Yep - I would say if you are on the edge now it's only going to get worse.

@ FTM -

You have hit upon another interesting point there regarding performance, you see with the MK1 I resented paying out for fuel + insurance (a lot more than ive been quoted for the new model:confused: ) when at the end of the day the car really didnt seem that fast at all (gets ready for the attack).

So yeh great to hear the performance has improved. I should really take a test drive but alas no time, not good when buying a new car but this will be my 5th skoda so I do have a rough idea;)

The fuel thing is not looking good then, a few more posts like your one and ill be put off for good - keep um coming and save me some cash:rofl:

A little off thread here but I am in spain and my trip says Litres per 100kms how do I convert that to Mpg please? must be a boffin out there somewhere

Thanks for the replies lads.

@ vrstu - I expect worse but was hoping for "not horrendous", will give it plenty of thought tonight. Ive also got swmbo breathing down my neck (I can feel her now) saying "you waste to much money on cars, we need a new kitchen, I like the car we have, you will only get rid of this one in six months time"(she must know about the 170 tdi vrs coming soon) Dont you just love women - They are always right though:mad:

Does the car have the maxidot display? (blue readout on dash)?

If so keep finger pressed on the rocker switch at the end of the wiper stalk and you should get a menu, im sure its in there.

Forgot to say - use the little button under the wiper stalk to select once in the menu.

[prepares for flamin] I agree with your comments about the mk1 octy, driving the furb vRS and testing the octy mk1 vrs I too thought it 'felt' slow (no torque imo) and is the reason I didn't get one. Now I swap between swmbo octy 2vRS and my Furb vRS and have to say it is the Furb that feels Slow when driven back to back in all departments including torque imo. The only downside to the Octy is the fuel consumption (and maybe its size if its a 'hot hatch' you're after), If it doesn't bankrupt you, cause a divorce, you won't regret it!

The new vRS does seem cheap to insure, similar to my Fabia for me this year.

I think what made matters worse (octy vrs1 vs furb vrs) was the fact my furby was chipped. I know the octy was faster in the real world but it just didnt have that shove you in the back take off in any gear go like a stabed rat excitement about it. fantastic motorway cruiser and I did enjoy it but it never gave me that feeling of getting plenty of bang for £££££.

Ive heard the in gear acceleration in the mk2 is very similar / quicker than a diesel.

Mate I couldnt belive it - I phoned up Privilege (great firm by the way) and they have quoted £550.00 full comp and ive had two claims in the last two years:eek:

Octy mk1 was nearly a grand from most of the companys I tried:confused: In fact now that I think about it some were another £500 on top of that and bear in mine I had no claims at the time:confused:

I could go sub £400 for insurance if I wanted but I'm opting for a very low excess. SWMBO has one claim and I have 3 points for SP30.

Ive heard the in gear acceleration in the mk2 is very similar / quicker than a diesel.

Again this amazed me, I would say quicker than a standard Fabia vRS and probably a mapped one too.
