Optional Extras - Insurance

Featured Replies

Has everyone declared there optional extras? such as leather seats, xenons + ESP?

If you have, how much extra did you have to pay for having them on?

Thanks in advance

I think it depends on the insurer, I am currently insured with elephant and when I enquired about things like Xenons and 18" wheels they just added them as mods, which they aren't really but you end up paying boy racer prices.

I am about to insure the Octy with eSure via Sainsbury's who only seem interested in things if they are added after the car leaves the dealers.

One more thing to look for when buying a new car is new car replacment during the first year if yours is lost or damaged beyond 60% of it's new value.

I gave a quick call to M&S insurance and the bloke there reckoned ESP + Xenons wouldn't affect my insurance much at all.....but he's had to put it to the underwriters for an exact quote.

Direct Line didn't care about my sunroof

just has a call back from M&S, and with them additional extras it won't cost me any extra! woohoooooooooooo :)

Yeah, usually if its a factory fit option, it won't affect the premium. With us, if you specify different alloys from the factory, then it won't affect the premium. If you add aftermarket ones however, watch your premium and excess' rocket!

Alloys are always a sore point for me. Most after market ones cost less that OEM one but they still add a good wack to your premium

I'm with admiral and I made a point of telling them about the cruise control and parking sensors.

The (foreign!) lady on the end seemed to think these were mods until I stressed that they were obviously factory fitted optional extras by the original purchaser!

Don't know if my premium was affected as I upgraded half way through and when I asked originally I was told it was £116 but about a week or so later when I confirmed everything and went ahead it was about £111 so I can't say if this was due to the time lapse or if my "mods" reduced or increased the price. (Although how anyone can say cruise control and parking sensors could increase it is beyond me - aren't they both there to improve driver safety???!!)

Or to put a different spin on it:

Cruise - you're not in full control of the car and will likely take longer to react to a situation as your feet will be off the pedals.

Parking sensors - aren't fool proof and people become reliant on them (rather than looking where they're going ) so you can still collide with concrete posts, etc

:D

Both valid points  although in my case on the cruise control - if the road ahead is clear I either put right foot to the side OR hover over the accelerator pedal (most likely actually!) and if busy definately hover over acc or brake pedal, depending on the conditions ;) . - Just means I know I am at a fixed speed without having to check.

As for parking I know what you mean but I always use the mirrors anyway and turn around as necessary, just rely on the sensors to warn of an impending collision (like someone's shopping bags as they walked behind me in a car park the other day  )
