Depends on how you were driving. You may need to visit the dealer or use VAG-COM to remove the fault code before the light will go out. If the car is driving ok now its reconnected, shouldnt be any damage.

I have just fitted a new MAF to my Octavia Tdi 110, but to identify the problem for certain I unplugged the duff MAF and drove to see if the performance improved. It did, but I did not get any warning lights on the dash. The plugging/unlplugging was always done with the ignition off, as I had read somewhere that if it was done while the ignition was on it would detect it and register a fault. The engine felt very flat and reluctant to rev freely, and struggled beyond 3000 rpm. Going up hills (every morning and evening on my daily commute) was a nightmare as there was no acceleration, and I was having to change down a gear to get up. I finally realised that i needed to sort it when I was left for dead (admittedly on a hill with 4 of us in the car!) by a 13 yr old peugeot 106 diesel .

Disconnecting the MAF temporarily improved the performance - i had read that this was a good way of diagnosing the fault. The new MAF I got was a Pierburg - i have read that these are more reliable and accurate than the standard Bosch sensor. Now the car has the get up and go that got up and went when the MAF failed (which as I recall was a gradual rather than sudden thing) - i have remembered what it's like to be able to overtake (although i got a bit ahead of myself tonight and had to think very quickly to avoid a prang) and am enjoying driving the car again :).

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need o know anything else.

Thanks, the acceleration in mine has got more gradual and the running at idle is a little uneven.

I'll give it another clean as it improved things before and if not i'll get a new MAF.

Where did you get this pierburg unit from and how much are they compared to the BOSCH unit.

I found it on ebay - currently retailing for around

Would disconnecting the MAF in a 02 VRS be ok to diagnose any possible problem with it?? it seems a simple way of finding out :)

Also, if so, whats the best way to drive? avoid high revs?
