Fire Extinguishers?

Featured Replies

Want a fire extinguisher for my new Octy, dont fancy paying Skoda prices anyone any views? And where to get one from?

try a camping/caravan supplier. they normally supply a little bracket to mount it too..

Please treat this as a bump, cos I've not had a car fire so couldn't say what hydrant would put one out - presumably a suitable one would have been tested against some standard?

However, a fire blanket as well :)

Halfords have them for sale as well and usually run a special offer along with warning triangles/tow ropes/seat belt cutters, etc. After having seen a friend's car go up in flames on a track day, I'm not convienced how much use one of these fire extinguishers would actually be though :D

I got one for mine from someone I know who works in a tool type place, and gets damn good discount. I think you need CO2 ones for a car? Or might be powder, I dunno. :D Hopefully I will never need to use it.

From experience the dry poweder extinguishers are as much use as a chocolate fireguard .......

Most extinguishers would only be able to deal with a small fire in its initial stages.

Our previous neighbour was a fire officer for the RAF and diddnt think much of them, he said "Car" fire extinguishers are about as much use as a chocolate brake disc. It would have to be a very very small fire for one to be effective and the chances of having a small fire where there is petrol are next to none.

EDIT: Traff beat me to it ;)

That said he suggested that is you must have one, try not to get a powder one as the vibration of being in the car all the time could lead to premature failure as the powder compacts itself into the base of the cylinder. If you have a powder extingusiher in the car, shake it every now and then, replacing it in the car in a different position each time if possible.

Also watch the use by date one the extinguisher.

I bought a powder one and never used it on a car, outside my house there was a small bush fire , worked a treat and got bought beers in my local bar by all my neighbours, sorry off thread but I would always have one in the car, you never know.
