Top gear at low speed?

Featured Replies

My 2.0 Tdi is quite happy trundling at 40mph in 6th. Obviously you can't boot it as you're nowhere near turbo range, but are you better off in 4th or 5th, i.e. is their a greater load at low revs or doesn't it make any difference? Does it affect fuel consumption either way?

I often pull away in 6th at 40mph, but would never use full throttle. It would be a slow old trudge up the rev counter using perhaps 50% throttle or less. On the flat, this doesn't seem to be an issue. For quicker acceleration, I tend to need to drop down to 3rd for high revvy speed at just under 3000rpm, or 4th for good just over 2000rpm boosting.

isn't that sort of thing bad for bearings etc?

i would say that it probably puts more strain on the engine in sixth gear, but if the engine isn't stuggling to cope with it then dont worry!

as for fuel consumption i think that possibly the higher revs will give better mpg because the engine is closer to it's peak torque rpm, and the volumetric effiency of the engine is higher at peak toque rpm.

And the DMF I believe! I'd be using 4th gear at 40mph in my 5-speeder as that's the optimum for accelerating and engine braking :D

It's not V12 NA engine so you can drive in 6th at 1200 rpm.

Rembember it's TURBO engine which is meant to be driven with the turbo being "on". Smart people on tdiclub.com who drive tdi engines for many years strongly suggest that you drive it in turbo zone(>1800 rpm) all the time, and experience showed that most problems in tdi engines occured if it was driven like a granny. This also means you should shift gears at least at 3000 rpm so when you change it wouldn't drop below 1800 rpm in next gear so turbo would always be on.

what happens normally on the diesels is that when they are driven 'like a granny' the inlet ports on the cylinder head get caked in a horrible oily sludge whch resembles crude oil!!

No chance of that happening in any of my cars!!!

my 'tuned up' specials rarely ever last long enough to find this out either!!

does this apply to petrol engines or just diesels

I guess it should apply for newer generations of variable geometry turbo petrols cause turbo kicks in early, almost like a turbo diesel. it doesn't sound logical for engines where turbo gets boost at high revs.

I kinda wondered about this when I got my Octy. It

Does that include when the engine is cold?

Does that include when the engine is cold?

the best way to warm the engine up is to drive normally at your normal speeds, but dont use full throttle until it's up to temperature

Does that include when the engine is cold?

I shift at 2500 rpm when engine is cold(temp mark not up to half) but i use very little throttle so it doesn't stress the engine.

Could anyone tell me the actual effects of engine remapping (Chip tuning) in a Octavia Vrs 1.8t Petrol on the performance and more so on the fuel economy

Erm, wrong thread?
