Strange 'clunk' from Octy TDi?

Featured Replies

For the last couple of months, my car makes a clunk sound on nearly every trip we make, and just the once. From inside the car it sounds like the drivers seat has just locked into position, but the seat is hardly ever moved. I was stood outside the car a few weeks ago, and my mum got into the passenger seat, and a clunk was clearly heard from the front offside suspension, as if the spring had moved/settled. I Had the front tyres replaced a few weeks ago, and nothing seemed amiss, so any ideas? Its due its 1st service next month, so will get it checked fully then.....

Also, doubt its related, but i am hearing the first rumbles of a wheel bearing on the way out, but cant quite trace which corner noise is coming from, any experience of changing one of these????

Thanks.

P.S. Has anyone any experience with Dennis Horton and Son Dealers, just outside of Lincoln? We are moving in a couple of months, and they will be my new local dealers!!

Is there any chance it's a brake pad binding to a disc? My discs rust up a little over night and the rear ones sometimes bind a little when i release the handbrake causing a clunk when i drive away and the pads break free. Just a thought.

Why are you changing it? Is your car out of warranty? I'm fairly sure wheel bearings are not classed along with wear and tear items like tyres and brake discs.

Have done a fair few front wheel bearing recently, on both Octavia and New Passat.

What kind of mileage was on the clock pls Lummox on the Octy just for info?

Well the couple I have done were less than 20k iirc. However it was a very small number of vehicles over all. Do a fair few Passats though which are the same set up.

Was under impression it wasn't covered, must have a read of the warranty book:O . It normally clunks after weve been driving for a little while, so I've ruled the pads out.

have any of the dampers got oil seeping out of them anywhere??
