New Octavia VRS TDI test drive report

Featured Replies

It's not really worth the wear on my keyboard to be honest. Duller than something that came first in a being dull competition. lumpy engine, huge power spike, and nose heavy. Like the Fabia vrs, only no where near as fun.

I took it on my private test area, and returned 20mpg. My own Octavia gets 17 mpg on the same run, only going much faster. 130 on a motorway type situation - thats it.

Waste 19k on something else imo.

just what i expected tbh :)

good on you for giving it a try dave

is it already out in the uk?

Nice review pal, sounds spot on.

So just like the reports of the engine in the saet then. That makes me feel a whole lot better about not waiting

It'll still be a popular repmobile will it not. It will fall into the same category as the Vectra CDTI and modeo TDCi.

They should have held back for when VW release a weasel with nearer 200PS

Failing that, a vRS with the new 500PS V12 TDI would have been a hoot.

I think the 140PD engine is a great engine... very torquey, very linear, good economy. Improving on it was never going to be easy - and imo they failed.

I've driven the 170PD in the A3, and MUCH prefer the 140PD in the new Leon.

I want you to see me build it :)

It was a pretty colour...and faster than mine.....so I can't really comment!! :)

TBH I really liked the VRS TDI Octy II, and I loved the way it delivered power, was just like and old turbo diesel.

I guess it depends on what you like.

My issue was the lack of standard equipment.

Looks more and more like chopping MKI for a bog standard elegance PD140. Not hearing enough good about the octy II vRS TDI to warrent 30 more BHP and no equipment.

The equipment level is up to you, it's called an options list. I just thought it was a dull dull car, not particularly economical, not that nice to drive, and alot of better cars out there for the money. It's supposed to be an exciting car, with the bonus of being practical. Its just a 5 door diesel with a fancy name. I couldn't think of a single scenario in which I would want to own one. It looks identical to its petrol brother, so just to add to the dullness, saxo's would be "owning" you at the lights too.

Have an Astra 888 for

not many people as there are only going to be 100 of them.

Track day fun maybe?

I meant the Octavia

I was just editing my post to ask that very question! It'll be bought by people who want a vRS but aren't allowed the petrol engine due to company car taxes. Thats precisely who Skoda are aiming it at.

I agree with you there, but I think they are also aiming at people who may be upgrading from a Fabia vrs too and want to keep with a diesel.

Well, thanks for the short review Shifty. Looks like I will

be sticking with petrol

Test one for yourself.

That way you'll know for sure whether you like it or not.

I personally like the sports suspension, lots of people don't, it's all down to personal opinion.

That's what I would have thought but a couple of weeks ago this forum was awash with people almost wetting themselves about spending their own money on one of these things.

Now that the residual argument seems to have been lost (see earlier thread for details) I agree that the only reason to run this car is as a company driver.

Dan

Just before I ordered my Octavia in March I got wind of a diesel vRS on the way and I was gutted I couldnt have one.

I'm not anymore though, I love my Elegance with all the toys on it and I wouldn't trade all that kit for 30PS.

But of course there are people that put exterior looks and slightly more speed over interior and equipment levels and the diesel vRS will no doubt appeal to them.

I agree, having owned both the 140 tdi and now the 2.0tfsi, I really liked the 170 engine. I found it alot smoother and also loved the way it takes of in 3rd :)
