Amazing amount of stone chips!

Featured Replies

Hi

Detailed my car a couple of weeks back, decided to give her a wash tonight and a seal and wax and could not help but notice the horendous amount of stone chips on my car its unbelieveble! I reckon there is about 30 on the bonnet alone. They are on the wings and all doors plus even on the roof! Has anyone every managed to get skoda to have a look into these cause its absolutley riddiculous.

(Sorry if this has been done before just a bit peeved at the mo)

Other than that car looks amazing!

Call it good, honest character! I got mauled by motorway gritters 3 times just 24 hours after picking mine up. Needless to say, I wasn't so mellow about it at the time though! From past threads though, you are not alone!

I can only sympathise. My Fabia is also covered in 'em. :(

I reckoned it was to do with the fact that most paints are water based these days, therefore not sure if this gives a better, thicker coating?

Mind you, the roads are in such a state and the truck drivers who carry building waste etc.. dont exactly ensure their cargo is fully covered to avoid things flying around at speed!

Also, could avoid driving too close to vehicles in front to avoid any kickback, but there's always someone who will pull in the space you've left

Could try not tailgating :p

If you're close enough to pick up chips the odds are that you're tailgating :thumbdwn:

I don't tail gate and have a number of stone chips on my bonnet

After just under 40k miles, I'm having the bonnet resprayed as its absolutely shocking.

i counted the chips in my bonnet (very sad i know) 38 for gods sake!

54 reg with 38k on the clock

i dont tailgate either. i think its awful that in 5 years time there will no paint on my car!!!

surely this is a defect in the paint?? i dont see other cars the same age with this!

All the stone chips on mine come to about 10, V plate with 53K :)

I've got 2 at last count after nearly 30K.

Edit: Approx guess having not looked :D

I have well over 10, Since Jan 2006. 17k.

I never tailgate either as its my main gripe when others do it too me. Had mine since April 05 26K. Im tempted to contact skoda direct? worth a shout do you think?

Mine is black and I have found that a Turtle Wax Chipstick hides them all. A coat of clear wax over the top and job done. Try it (if its black, Its the only one that matches the paint colour)

unless you buy a bonnet bra

 I'd rather have the stone chips!!! :D

Hardly any stone chips on my Fabia after 82k miles of hard driving :D Even fewer on the Mondeo :D

53 reg and I have one on the bonnet and I think there is one the front passenger door :( I tend to repair them as soon as they appear  Like to keep it looking new.... couldn't possibly leave a stonechip on me car :D

I found this site to be really useful!

http://www.clean-image.co.uk/articles/stone-chips.htm

If you buy a good brush from your local art shop it makes the job easier........ takes a while to get rid of them all though!!! I normally use a bit of 1500 wet and dry and meguires number 1 to get a perfectly smooth polished finish to the chips!!

The paintwork on the Fabia does seem very prone to stone chips, mine is just over year old with 12k and never seen so many chips appear on the bonnet with one on the roof and a couple on the doors for a car of this age. Even my 'cheap' Fiat Punto only had a couple of chips on the bonnet after 6 years.

There is something wrong with the paintwork, either its been applied too thin or its something to do with being this new 'Eco' type paint. Dont think the paintwork warrenty covers stone chips ?

whats is detailing?

I have the suspicion that I will have lots of chips soon as all the roads in my area have beenn marked up to be re-surfaced and 10mph signs have been put up

Although it does seem pointless as one road has been done and already the surface where the tyres run is smooth and stone everywhere except the road

My Octy is a little over a year old and 8k (I know I should get out more) and in the last month I have picked up two nasty stone chips right throught to the grey/white primer, I do not tailgate and the position of the chips , on the top of the bonnet edge to wing gap and on the top of the rear spoiler mean I must have been mortared by the bas*ar*s:mad:

whats is detailing?

Here's a good description: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-auto-detailing.htm

It's basically wasting a huge amount of time washing, cleaning and polishing a car rather than getting out and driving it ;)

O ok. thought it had something to do decals.

just as much a waste of time.

Suppose a stone chip is a detail?

I always thought it was a waste of time too but once done the car looks amazing. better than when I picked it up. Mind you 6hrs hard work getting the swirls out of it.

So you spend 6 hours making it look great, take a photo, and then you drive it for 10 minutes and it's filthy again? I can live with swirls ;)

Chris

It depends on where you live to a certain amount. Some councils resurface roads properly whereas other (Leicestershire for one) just chuckd down a load of chippings.
