Xenon hight - not impressed.

Featured Replies

I took the car to Walkinshaws this afternoon to have the Xenons checked as I am not happy with the height.

After 2 minutes, the technician came in to see me to tell me that they were 'slightly' ILLEGAL

He showed me the reading through the lens they use for calibration and it did show just over 1.25 (or whatever the reading was) and he pointed out they should be on the line.

Also, after I mentioned that the car had just been lowered (25mm) he said that the xenons will make their own adjustments regardless or the lowering ??

He seemed to know his stuff as he mentioned the potentiometer on the axle etc, etc.

He looked under the bonnet as well and asked me if the lights were retro fitted ?

He said that they didn't look like VW ones at all and because he's not worked on Skoda xenons before, maybe Skoda made their own.

Although the lights are bright, just not happy with the height. Disappointed. :(

P.S - Well impressed with the Garage as they charged me nothing and gave me a great cup of coffee :)

AS you know Jon, I had this problem and when they eventually adjusted them to what they called the 'legal limit'. They were spot on...Awesome in fact

Quote from my dealer...." the light box is only set for normal bulbs so we have to guess what Xenons should be at" !!!

Did you take it to a Skoda dealer?

They are set the same way as VW anyhow, and if the car is lowered they should be reset. The axle sensor will adjust them but if you think that the sensor has an upper and lower adaptation limit when its lowered it will be on the lower one, so the light level may well be ok, but if it needs to adjust itself lower it wont be able to. With it reset it will then have the full range to work on again.

No. The reason for this is my nearest Skoda dealer is in Carlisle (100 miles return) whereas Walkinshaws VW is 16 return).

They were 'checked' at 10k service by Telfords in carlisle, but by the way they changed the seat cover and ruined the whole thing with oily hand prints on the headrest, maybe I wont take their word for it.

Thanks for the info anyway :)

Might be worth taking it to an MOT station as they should be able to sort them out for you :D

Chris

Does it still count as illegal if you set it on the lowest setting..? ;)

Use the search to find my posts on this subject.

You need a screwdriver and vag-com to adjust them correctly.

Yeah, I feel my headlights are a bit low with just myself and a passenger in the car, but with people in the back they practically point straight at the ground! Tempted to try to adjust but think I'll let the dealer have a go first.

That's why I don't like xenons. Tricky to adjust, can't be easily upgraded and you pay more for them....

If it's that straight forward, how come 2 Main Dealers can't do it properley ?

P.S cheers for the advice.

Josh how do you adjust the sensor on the rear beam. Didnt you say your was upside down?

Xenons are great and won't go back now.Although mine were slightly low at first they sorted them for me.

Ditto. But it took three attempts!!

I asked for mine to be set to the maximum legal height when it was PDI'd and they're great!

Like I mentioned, mine are set to the max and the thing i'm not happy with is when driving down a hill in the dark (obviously) the lights illuminate about 20 yards in front of the car. Now that might seem O.K for some, but the roads around here are PITCH black with not much lighting.

even on the flat, it just doesn't seem far enough.

I've never had anyone flash me coming the other way so they're not blinding anyone at all.

Other cars I see with xenons coming towards me seem unbelievably bright (and maybe a little too much) and that's how i've always seen xenons, excellent coverage and super bright. Maybe i'm just not used to xenons and never will be.

i read all the previous posts on here about adjusting the xenons and requiring VAGCOM to do it , why do you need it exactly ? to reset the rear sensor ? its just that i adjusted mine at work without VAGCOM(haven't got a full version so couldn't use it anyway) and i didn't have a problem , they didn't seem to reset after the ignition was turned off/on ,or have they moved back and i've not noticed , all i did was set the beam tester up on the centre of the xenon lens and went from there , mine were out all over the place due to my minor bump last year

My understanding was that you use VAG-COM to put them in the adjustment position so that they use that as the new reference point from which to adjust? Worth reading the Ross-tech guide about it - probably explains it better :D

Chris

ah , i see your point Chris , put the sensor in a new position so it can have a full adjustment range again after the lights have been manually adjusted

Mine are great and i have been flashed by oncoming traffic, but only once.:D
