Check your brake line!

And I mean it:

My car was in for its MOT today at Phils (piv34uk), and when he had it up on the ramp for the brake test, the brake line on the driver's side (NSF?) split and spilled its contents all over the wheel arch and floor... On a closer look it appears that the metal bracket (two prongs are visible in the 'wet spot') has been rubbing against the brake line and over time created a weak spot. Under normal braking it appears to be fully functional, but I don't want to think what could have happened if I had to make an emergency stop

Q.

glad i have changed mine whilst changing my calipers, glad it went where and when it did. might have beena nasty tale on the road

In a way that was a bit of luck going when it did.

Yes , but did it pass? ;)

Or Silverstone

i hope you are going to get them to bend that bracket out of way to stop any future reoccurance , what about checking the other side as well

I'm sure they'll take care of that, but I will mention it. We checked the other side, but that bracket is occupied there by the ABS sensor, so there is no real sharp object to rub against.

is the ABS sensor rooted different on the damaged pipe side ? to not be in the bracket

  • Author

No, the ABS sensor is being held in place by the two prongs (i.e. bracket). I think that for LHD they have the sensor on the other side, hence the bracket appears on both sides.

so the shockers are a universal fit , not handed then

  • Author

Uhm... pass :)

Yes the shocks are universal I think.

If you look further down the pipe you will see a small length of extra sleeving which can be (and should be) slid into place to protect from rubbing.

The little 'un to bed, then? :D

Got the bus service worked out, so I'll speak to you tomorrow about the finer details

Is that not the bracket that holds the connector for the brake wad wear wire ? (NSF only)

  • Author

I don't think so, but as mine have been disabled since I upgraded to Ferodos I can not say for sure.

Aaargh, this is going to turn into a nasty one.

The brake hose that was ordered in turned out to be for the normal Octavia, which is 6 (or 60) mm too short :(

And now it seems that they can't find ANY replacement part for the vRS in the UK AND Czech Republic  !!!

The only aftermarket replacement I can find is one from Neuspeed at Awesome, but that is for a complete set at a lovely price of £99 inc delivery !

If anyone knows of any other hoses that fit or suppliers, please let me know, as I can't leave the car as it is for too much longer :(

Q - I assume you have Ross's number ?

Im not suprised its been rubbing, by the looks of it that bracket is in the wrong place, its too high up, its been put back on wrong (had the dampers changed, strut off?).

I would expect the brake line would be the same as any car on the same platform, so TT, S3, Leon 20VT, Golf V64M etc....

EDIT: Badger5 does uprated lines for around £50 for the front pair IIRC but unfortunately he's on holiday until the 28th so not much use I'm afraid.

Goochie, no I don't have Lummox's number, but he is here now :)

Lummox, the spring on that side has been replaced a while back, so yes, that could have been the cause. That's now not my concern though, as I desperately need to source a replacement.

I have found this one here, which seems to be the correct one: AVS Car Parts - www.vwspares.co.uk

Can you confirm?

I would have thought a TT line would work just fine, I think I have a couple in the shed. Golfturbo would have some i'm sure but being as we wouldnt do a deal with him on selling the brake kits to our members i'm not sure how willing he will be to help out. Might be worth a PM.

I will have a look when i get home and let you know Q.

Cheers Lummox.
