Winter Wheels

Featured Replies

Can anyone help me out.....

I need some other wheels for the winter as the 17" ones and RE050's on my A5 vRS will be as much use as a chocolate teapot when / if the white stuff comes.

I know I can get new tyres for the car, but I dont want to subject my alloys any salt, however sparingly Aberdeenshire Council / BEAR Scotland distribute it.

Now to get to the point, I had thought about getting 4 x steel wheels like the spare for winter use.

I was in the local dealer today and the bloke I spoke to wasnt sure if it would be safe to put 4 x steels on the car, as the spare is technically classed as a space saver and is limited to 50mph (despite being a 205/55 16!! Larger wheels than my old Focus!!)

Is this because you shouldnt have diffrent sized wheels on one axle, or is it because the wheels are actually only rated at 50mph???????

Also, are there any thoughts on winter tyres?

Feedback and suggestions are much appreciated!!:)

The main reason for the sticker on the spare wheel is because on some Fabias the tyres are directional - hence putting one on the wrong side of the car could result in unpredicatble handling...

Good call, hadnt thought of that one.....

I think nearly all tyres now, including the Bridgestones on my Octy are directional.....good for clearing rain, but they really are useless in snow!

Michelin do specific winter tyres such as the alpine range.

I'm sure others do too :)

Can't see why 4 205/55/r16 would be a problem onthe car as long as the rolling radius is the same, but best to check. Surely the low trim level versions still come with steel wheels and trims.

I would look for an Octy with steel wheels in the scrapyard and see what you can find. It wouldn't matter if they were slightly smaller as long as they were all the same. There is an option in my MaxiDot for winter wheels but I've not looked at it.

Alternatively what about a cheapo Halfrauds/ebay or similar tyre and wheel package, there are some good bargains out there.

Smerko, would you be a Aberdonian Briskodian as well????

I havent got as far as them yet.........the burning question is:

Are the steel spares in a Octy II vRS the same as the normal steels on any other Octy II?

If that is the case, then that problem is solved.

It's an Octy still.

As long as the wheels are a size that fits and octy and all the same I would have thought it should be fine.

Just make sure you put tyres on it to keep the same rolling radius so the speedo stays accurate ish.

No Fabia vRS has been fitted with directional tyres from the factory. I dont think an Octavia has either.
