Will using fully sythetic oil (such as Castrol Formula RS ) be ok in my Mk1 VRS ??

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

In my previous 2 cars I have always used "Castrol Formula RS" oil (now called Castrol Edge Sport I believe.).

The oil is fully synthetic 0/40, and so is a little thinner than that quoted in all the skoda info.

Do any of you out there use it, and will it be ok to use in my Black MK1 Octavia VRS???

I know it isn,t a long life oil, but that wont matter as I always change my engine oil every 6 month,s as, I do alot of short journey,s to and from work which is only 3 miles away.(I know, im a lazy b***ard.)

Your comments and surgestions would be most appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Listerfan.

Castrol 0w40 Rs is more than ok on Fixed intervals as vrs is 0w30 as std but ow40 will do just as well. I wouldn't pay more than 32 quid though as its now discontinued, even though its the same oil in the Edge can,

IMO you would do well to talk to Simon and Guy at Opie Oils Opie Oils they will give you very good advice and offer good (better) alternatives at a similar price. I'm sure you will get discount on listed prices as a Briskoda member. Personally my favourite is Silkolene Pro-R or Pro-S, these are genuine synthetic based oils (ester/pao base) rather than glorified cracked mineral "synthetic" , of which the Castrol RS is one example. Nothing "wrong" with the Castrol at all, except for being a tad thin for my liking, just that there is better for the same price.

The guys will sell you anything you wish, but will offer top advice if you want it :)

Sorry Rich, don't understand? You seem to be saying that the thicker 0W40 is too thin, compared with a standard 0W30?

Hi,

From my own experience with turbocharged cars (not specifically VAG), 0w30, 0W40 oils are too thin. But if VAG spec that oil then I guess it's ok, just personally I wouldn't be happy with it if you are going to "use" it properly  I'd be happier with a 10/40.

This is my opinion from my own experiences, if VAG spec an oil that is considered suitable then I'm sure it will be for most people.

Don't see what difference the cold (W for Winter) viscosity will make, since you shouldn't "use" an engine properly until it's warmed up.

I thought the current VAG spec for oil was 5W-30?.

you're right of course, it "shouldn't" , but the 0W40's that I've had experience of (Cartrol RS and Mobil1) have suffered from pressure drop for me when they are hot compared with a good 5W40 or 10W40 synthetic....

That's fair, but it does cast doubt in my mind as to whether or not some of these oils are actually delivering the claimed SAE ratings. Of course, the last car I had with an oil pressure gauge was my dad's Opel Ascona, and that was back in the days of 20W50 with pretty much everything.

The 0w part is how thin when cold so it gets round the engine quicker (less wear)

the 30 or 40 is when hot and both are more than Ok for vw. The car may need a top up on a rare occation but the better fuel consumption over 10w40 pays for itself over and over.

As for the new 5w30 castrol recommend, its primerally for the new 504/07 std so to make the money back they just changed there books from 0w30 to 5w30 so everone buys the most expensive one for the older cars but 0w30 5w30 5w40

all if thay meet SL/SM standards they will be more than ok in the car
