Oil behind headlight on off side headlight

Featured Replies

Actually it's on my Ibiza but after some help whilst SC.net is down.

Just been out to change a sidelight bulb on the drivers side and found, somewhat disturbingly, the back of the headlight cover (so inside the engine bay) is covered with a black, oily film. It's right above the SMIC.

Just checked the oil level and it's well down, despite it being sub 1000 miles from the last service.

What the heck is in that area which could leak / spray oil out?

Help!

If its a Ibiza with 1.2 engine (3 cylinder) it could be coming from the crankshaft seal and spraying a very fine mist of oil upwards.

Needs sorting soon.

Oh yes, mentioning which Ibiza would be handy. It's a PD130 tractor.

turbo intercooler pipe seals can leak , i'd check them for damage , pipes are just push fitted and held with a clip iirc

Stopped off at ABP on the way home (they did the last service).

The oil is coming from the intercooler pipe. That should be dry, shouldn't it?

We also spotted some oil around the filler cap that was fresh.

Does the PD130 have an oil breather (is that the correct term?)? The guy who had a brief look at it thought that if that was blocked, oil could be passed through the turbo or past the filler cap.

Alternatively, the seals in the turbo could be on their last legs, but why then the oil around the cap? I hope not as the seals went on the turbo on my Scooby

very slight misting around intercooler pipes is acceptable iirc idealy there shouldn't be any

oil filler cap should seal without any gases or oil passing by

could the oil at the filler just be from slight spillage when the service was done ?

Thanks Rick.

No, I don't think there was any oil left around the cap when I was doing the lights at lunch, then when I got to ABP there was some. There also looked to be a fresh deposit on the "shelf" under the intercooler pipe. Quite a film on the back of the headlight too.

The inter cooler pipes usually leak a bit when at rest as the couplings relax when there isnt any boost going through them.

It's far from a mist IMO and it's nasty to get off your hands with only soap!

I think the problem is explained...

I popped into the local Seat dealer to get some more 505.01 oil and asked if one of their tech's would look at it. He had me rev the car with the bonnet open and quickly decided there's a hole in the boost pipe as he could hear a sucking. New pipe ordered up.

If the split is pointing to the back of the headlight, then I think it must have sprayed out. I checked the back of the headlight last night and it was pretty clean, so it's not getting sprayed with lots of oil.

As for the oil around the filler cap - there is a bit of gunk around the hole. When the engine is cold (I looked this morning), it looks solid. After driving, the heat from the engine makes it runny(ish) again, so it looks like it could have come from the filler cap.

I'm dipping the oil every morning now to keep tabs on consumption.

Thanks all (and for letting me borrow you forum whist ours was down).
