2.0TDi - YAWN!

Featured Replies

Just took a colleagues A4 Avant into town, its the first time I've driven a 2.0T VAG diesel - what a disapointment :thumbdwn:

I was expecting it to feel quick and torquey but it wasnt at all.

How can people drive automatics? I can see how it must be nice in traffic but its so slow to respond when pulling away? This was the first auto I've driven in about 4 years and I was expecting things to be better.

The novelty of being able to change gear by pushing the stick forwards and backwards wore off within about 5 miles.

YAWN!

The full power of a TDI can only be felt "in gear" and uphill. I'm suspecting that you didn't try it in either of these scenario's or you'd have been seeing off Impreza's and Evo's :P:rofl:

PMSL! I always think I'm gonna stall when I drive automatics! I just cant quite get over the fact that theres no clutch! haha!

Thought the same when I drove a porsche with tiptoptrintronic thing.

Maybe I was accelerating by pressing the brake

I took a Octy vRS 2.0 Tdi for a Test Drive............This too was a disapointment..:( .. I think my Furbie vRS is faster and it keeps a smile on my face.................:) :)

Diesel and auto have never been a brilliant combination.

Acceleration procedure seems to be:

Floor it.... wait..... wait a bit.......kick down...wait......accelerate - by which point you've lost the overtaking oportunity.

The TDCi manual Mondeos we have seem so much better.

Excuse the ignorance. Was it the the 2.0TDi 140bhp or 2.0TDi 170bhp?

I am considering the 2.0TDi 170bhp for my next car.

No idea. Its a 10 month old A4 Avant non-quattro S-Line with twin tail pipes

Think that's the 140bhp one with a 7-speed auto box....

Chris

*phew* Will be the 140bhp then, I am yet to test drive the 170bhp.

S'not quite the same, but my dear old mum had a test drive in a Honda Jazz and asked me to try it out. That had a 7-speed auto box, and all that happened when you pushed the accelerator all the way down was it kept changing down until it redlined, then changed up until it redlined... the end result was that you got far more acceleration just gently easing the pedal down a fraction so it stayed in gear. Very odd.

So what you're actually saying is "torque convertor converted all the torque into hot oil", rather than "2.0l turbo-diesels are slow"?

I'm saying that the 140bhp 2.0TDi is apaulingly slow.

Autos are painful.

The DSG is tollerable, but I'd still want a manual gearbox on any car I have for a good few years yet.

Not with a manual gearbox it isn't

 Sorry for the language but b0ll0cks, I have the 2.0 TDI with the dsg and I promise that if you learn how to drive it and know how much you have to push the gas to cruise, change down or sprint it will go, it takes time to learn, I agree that the combo of Auto and Diesel is not the best but I promise when you get used to it it flies, in a very calm manner.

maybe you should stick to drving supercars then:)

i dont like driving automatic cars either.... i an never get used to having two pedals... when i come up to a roundabout or something i allways press the brake with my left foot thinking it is the clutch pedal, which nearly sends me out throught the windscreen every time....:)

but I promise when you get used to it it flies, in a very calm manner.

I guess it depends what your frame of reference is ;)

My last car was a golf 2.0 tdi manual, before that I have driven different cars, I work as a logisitcs manager so have driven a fair few, enjoyed driving one of the first Alfa 159 2.4 Diesels in torino, sure none of them were supercars but I just got hot under the collar as it may not be the fastest thing out there but it is not slow.

(Edit) Perhaps I could put the 2.0l from a fabia in it , mmmmmmm

I was looking forward to driving it but got out very disappointed - Our Octavia Elegance 1.8T felt a lot more sprightly, in 150 bhp standard trim.

Surely you shouldnt have to learn how to get a car to accelerate quickl? On a dry road, mashing your foot to the floor should be the fastest way to accelerate in any car, especially in an auto where you dont have to think about being in the right gear.

edited for Goochie...
