Life of a turbo?

Featured Replies

I was just wondering how long they would last on say a mk1 octy vrs 91.8t) and how much they would cost to replace.

I know there are people on here with mark one octys with over 100k and no problems, but there are furby owners with re-maps who are blowing them at relatively small mileages..., one guy was quoted £1,400 to fix it. Not sure how much for a mark one octy....

People have taken 1.8T's well over 120k - I knew of a TDi taxi Octavia that managed 330,000 before it went pop.

wow tha\ts good.

Whats the average life though?

Any one had any more experences?

All depends how the car has been driven/treated really. :D

Chris

mine was knackered at 112K, cost was £250 for a 2nd hand unit and about £200 fitted including new gaskets and bolts.

Mine is still fine at 131K :)

Anyone have a clue to why this would happen ? Is the Furby turbo of poor quality ?

excessive boost pressure used in the remap iirc , Fabia turbos only ok upto 1.5-1.6 bar ,higher than that and it gets marginal , bearing is the weak link as it is a plain bearing not a roller bearing , also not allowing the turbo to cool down properly after a sustained high boost run can cause premature turbo failure

I always let my car cool down after a blast, never thrash it when it's cold, never short shift, and I try not to 'turbo' it unless it's really needed.

I had an old Citroen CX Gti Turbo that had done 150K on its original turbo, with no intercooler, and it never let me down, because I drove it properly, and believe me that WAS a fast car when it needed to be.

It was the best car I have ever had in nearly 30 years of driving, but I must admit, my Fabia is running a close second, and if the fabia packs in I expect it will be component failure rather than my driving style that kills it.

IMO people expect too much of their cars, and they should be driven like it says on the tin, so to speak.
