Standing 1/4: Fabia vRS v Astra CDTi 150 ??

Featured Replies

Hi! This is my first post on the forum, though I found it when in the process of buying my Fabia vRS (04 plate) which I picked up yesterday! What a car!

It has already thrown up a challenge: A friend of mine has an Astra CDTi SRi 150 which he considers pretty fast. In the posturing that follows the purchase of a fast car, I suggested that he looked hurt when considering that my new car may be quicker than his! While this was good fun, the gauntlet may have just been thrown down and we may head to a drag strip (can't afford a track day yet!) to find out.

To give me a heads up, I have done some research and I understand my vRS should cover the 1/4 mile in around 16.5 (it's standard), but for the life of me I can't find out a time for the Astra.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm up against?!?

Thanks, Stu

It'll be close

Astra

Power 150bhp

torque - 315nm

1880 kg

Fabia

Power 130bhp

torque - 310nm

1720kg

It should be very very very close. Not enough to notice in everyday driving. Quarter of a mile time, should be the close also.

Optimistically, I'd say the Fabia, would 'just' take it in a drag ....

Yup...considering that wide 200kgs difference.

apart from those weights are utter ar5e.

Fabia 1315kg

Astra 1345kg

Yes I was just thinking the Astra surely doesnt weigh the same as a Monaro (moreorless) lol

Interesting...

Does anyone have a standing 1/4 time for the Astra?

It sounds like it'll be close. It may be down to the driver! I'd best find a straight bit of road and get some practice in!

Make sure you remove the spare wheel + jack and any other crap you may have in the boot, oh yea dont eat breakfast that day and drive with no shoes on. Its all weight saved you know:rofl: could gain you another 0.25 secs.

take the back seat out and parcel shelf too, lol

interesting, as when I looked for a new car, I wanted the Asta CDTI 150, but hubby said no, go for the Fabia VRS as it was cheaper!

did I make the right choice, 'cos I do like the look of the Astra Sports Hatch:confused:

I would have thought the Astra seeing the weight differences are negligable. I don't know what the Astra's gearbox ratios are like though.

I have driven a couple of cars with that 150 motor, vectra and saab(so a touch heavier), but it doesnt feel like 150 bhp til the revs are pretty high. Doesnt pull as well as my fabia from low revs though it is much smoother. I suspect if you could compare the torque curves the vag motor would be flatter. Also as has been mentioned here many times the 130 is the minimum rating europe wide and 145 standard is not unheard of. Anyway the result will be down to traction off the line sans traction control....

Not that I'm saying you are, but don't base your decision to buy a car on "Top Trumps" figures like 1/4 mile, 0-60, bhp, etc.

Take cars out for a test drive, speak to the dealers to see what kind of deal they can offer you, etc.

He's only comparing the speeds of the two cars. Quarter of a mile would be even. Higher speeds, the Astra would slightly pull away, but probably not even enough to notice.

I rekon the furby would trounce the astra....

Having driven the 130bhp astra and a 150bhp signum/vectra the engine is laggy and the gearing is silly.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Think you'll find that comment is common on pretty much all owners forums ;) Worth taking with a big pinch of salt :D

Anyone know how the drag coefficients compare - that could be a big factor as the speeds rise :D

Chris

The astra has some very fine lines to it. And then theirs the Fabia....

Would be intersting to see the drag comparions. What's the Fabia's?

i had a 10 minute blat against one of these about a month ago on some long straights/nice sweeping bends and I couldn't get by it. Mine is remapped and I assume his was also as he had a full car with by the looks of it lots of luggage too, it was very impressive and no doubt if it wasn't carrying so much weight that day it would of simply driven away from me.

apart from those weights are utter ar5e.

Was thinking the same. My old clio was only 930kg

It may well be a fine car, but, even in vRS form, the Fabia does look a bit ungainly...

For what it's worth, i doubt that there'd be much in it, but the Astra would almost certainly have the edge.

But which would show the highest MPG figure ? ;)

In a drag race it could be influenced highly by the Astra's traction control being a billion times better than the Fabia's.

I wouldn't use traction control in a drag though! Stifles far too much!

MC_Bodge - i love the look of the Fabia! It's chunky, has enough skirts and vents to look purposeful without being over the top, and it's proportions are great!

Thats exactly my point. The ASR on the Octavia and Fabia is useless for drag starts but in the 350Z it is very useful indeed as it reduces power rather than cutting it - and it is the fastest way to get off the line without wasting power in a smoke trail

If the Astra has a similarly clever TC system he could leave it switched on.

And on that note don't even bother turning up if the ground's cold or wet
