The DVLA obviously give our info to others

Featured Replies

How do you explain this, whilst searching for bits for the Skoda I went onto this site

https://www.247spares.co.uk/carparts/used-skoda-parts/

If you type in your car reg it comes back with the model, colour etc. I did it on a car weve only had for 4 months & it knew the answer. It must be info from the DVLA

To add if you know a celebrities reg you can find the car they currently own

The RAC website has had this info for a while, as does the dvla's on website. The only info you dont get back is the owner information.

There's a huge difference between making basic vehicle information available based on the VRM , and confidential personal details about the registered keeper.

There are plenty of sites where you can get these details

Just tried the "4FO" reg I saw on a brand new Lambo at the weekend...... and it is correct.

Tried the reg of my Dad's steam traction engine and it couldn't find the info though

i think it's disgracefull when the dvla sell on personal info tho, like to these clamping frims etc, after all is that a breach of the data protection act??

Its hardly personal information though is it - Nothing more there than you could get in Tesco's car park.

My example 4FO comes up as a yellow Lambo.... I knew that because I'd seen it in a car park at the weekend.

The "reputable ????" parking companies can also obtain name & address should they need to recover monies from you, I gather some less reputable companies have used this info.

Spot a car you like, obtain the details & you know where the owner lives.

Also with Sat nav NEVER put your home address as home. Their have been instances of vallet parkers finding out where you live, also with your front door probably on the car key its one step more they dont have to deal with.

Also garages etc all have the ability to find out your address so if they know a mate who would like your car they know where to find it. Same if someone nicks your portable sat nav

So best to set your sat nav "home" to the local cop shop then

Anyone got William's address? :P

in New zealand you just go to the post office with the reg number and for one dollar fifty they can tell you who owns the car and where they live!!!

k:)

There are only a few compaines out there who hold comprehensive databases of car details, the big two (currently) being HPI and Experian.

They then sell access to this to people who need it (how else do you think your insurance company know what car you have when you simply enter a VRM when getting a quote?).

They also hold details of insurance write-offs, finance agreements, stolen records from the police. If they didn't, the HPI check you pay ~£40 for when buying a used car would be worthless.

Up until this year, it was true that you could send the DVLA a reg plate and £2.50 and get a keepers details back. This changed after a parliamentary review was ordered at the start of the year:

DVLA to review data access | The Register

We're trying to gain access to keeper info at work (for strictly above board, legitimate and legal purposes I might add) and are having to jump through all sorts of hoops to get it :(

In switzerland you can buy a book in most news agents, that lists every car registered in switzerland and the owners name and address!!

There is very little road rage in switzerland!

Yep, Seen that on a "Clarkson" program

I just typed in my reg and as far as they're concerned, my reg belongs to a "SILVER SKODA SUPERB CLASSIC TDI 5 DOOR". Erm... Okay.

Having driven a "European motoring event" there I can vouche for a high Police presence & a zero tolerance policy. Probably why they all drive so carefully. Also the roads are fairly empty, & incredibly well maintained, combined with the undulating terrain it makes for a great driving experience

Have a look at your V5, chances are thats what it says you have. The car was registered incorrectly in the first place.

Had this problem with my first vRS, it was an Ambiente TDI that run on petrol. Quick letter to the DVLA and all sorted.

yeah but if you give your insurance company the reg number they might think it's a tdi as well and give you cheaper insurance...

Yep - and your insurance would be void as it would state the wrong car. It is your responsibility to check that the document is accurate. It was certainly a problem with lots of the early RSs (including mine) and I continually have to check that they have got the right car on incurance quotes etc as some insurers don't seem to update their records that often :( .

Yeah, my V5 is fine. I think it was wrong before I bought it, but the dealers sorted it out. Obviously some records are still not up to date! :)

I like that idea! :D I'll just get some Superb badges, they won't be able to tell the difference!

So back to the original question, is this not the same as when you go to the parts counter at your local dealer, or Halfords etc. Give them the reg plate and then they can call up exactly the right part for your particular model and year of manufacturer. Does this info come from DVLA?
