Here it is hot off the press

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. and Audi of America, Inc. today announced a customer service action in which the companies will ultimately replace the ignition coils in all 2001 and 2002 model year cars equipped with certain engines that have been experiencing a higher-than-normal failure rate. Also affected are very early production 2003 models. [/quote:48cf189a93]

The Whole Story Here

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/030204/detu023_1.html

Looks like VWoA are recalling all the 1.8Ts. When will this happen in the UK. How can we persuade them to do the same here.

I heard this being mentioned on the 'Talksport' news about an hour ago, I definitely heard the words Skoda and 1.8 turbo. As the U.S. news item doesn't mention Skoda (I don't even know if they are sold over there) I'm hoping this relates to the UK as well. I'm picking up my RS in a few weeks time and don't need this... :(

Worhit

I think youre ok, it mentions upto early 2003 models, if your getting a new one it should already have the revised part.

I certainly hope that's the case, the car is at his 'storage facility' (probably some field down the road  ) and isn't coming straight from the 'production line'. It's Corrida Red, I'm not sure how long the 'new' colour has been about.

I've been trying to locate the UK story of the recall, I know 'Talksport' take their news from Sky, but there isn't anything on their website.

If you want to see some of the American stories go to google.co.uk - select the news tab and search 'vw recall' you will find a few stories there.

Paul

It was just on Sky News, VW are recalling 850,000 cars. Skoda/Seat/VW and Audi. Unsuprisingly VW's share price plummeted on the news.

Manny

Does this mean free coilpacks for us?? :D

Brilliant news, and I'm glad I put my spare cash into gold and not coil packs! :D

worthit I got my RS mid August last year and it was one of the 1st corrida red RS's in the UK so I would say you should have a very new car ie Its not been in a field for months.

Ok cheers mate :D

If they are definitely doing a recall in America, then we should get one here too. After all, they say the coil pack problems are caused by damp weather, and oour weather has to be far damper than a lot of America

BBC Watchdog have just broadcast an item about VAG coil packs. Does not look good for VAG image, all the brands in the group were mentioned although it was VW that took the biggest hit. For all that was said there was no good news about the restocking of coil packs. The Watchdog team reckon that 3.2 million packs are required to solve the problem around the world

What are the symptoms when the car has a bad Coil Pack???

Isaac,

Slightly rough idling, lack of power whilst speeding up usually acompanied by check engine light flashing or on solid. slowly get worse till you can just about drive it.

Had one go last year and drove it for 50 kms, at that point 55kmh was all it would go at.

I came across this on www.vw.ie, a pop-up window appears when the site is loading, it reads,

Ignition Coils

Does anyone make a performance coil pack?? as the standard one's are crap. :thumbdwn:

Way to resurrect a two year old thread.

May I point you in the direction of the 'Search' facility.

It's up there ^^^^^^^^^^^

If anybody hasn't done so already, have a look in the OCTAVIA forum on this site, there's a very interesting thread/poll regarding coil packs. Haven't checked the version of my coil packs yet but will do so a.s.a.p
