Cleaning the MAF on 1.9TDi

Featured Replies

My turbo problem from a while back has come back a few times, and a colleague with an Audi S3 says he had a very similar issue and cleaning his MAF sorted it.

I've got a bottle of Methylated Spirit, unfortunately the MAF itself is held in place with a proprietary screw (presumably to stop idiots like me taking it off and cleaning it).

Does anyone know of the name or type or some sort of classification for this screw and/or the screwdriver bit you need to remove it? Better yet, does anyone know where to get such a bit?

I'd like to try doing this before paying out over

Its a security allan key iirc, halfords sell them

Yep, Halfords is the place. Why not change the sensor? I got some new ones for my M5 from a place in the states. Cost about 100 quid. Funny thing is, they are VAG ones made by Bosch. From a BM dealer, it's about 400 quid!

Halfords eh? Excellent Burns>

Cheers for that. I realize this could only be a temporary solution, and that it's entirely possible the fault will recur, in which case I'll be buying a new MAF.

However, as I've just had my 65,000 service and belt change, I'm

Just spray some suitable solvent cleaner over the element.

IPA or Servisol safeclean 50 should do ok

Halfrauds may not have the screwdriver bits for removing the MAF , if they the same as mine on the Fabia , they are 5 point tamperproof (like a TORX but with 5 instead of 6 grooves in the screw) , i got a set off Snap-on for about £10

I managed to get a new Pierburg MAF for my Octy 110 Tdi for under

Yeah it isn't a security torx, i have a full set of them and the thing on the MAF is a 5 point not 6 point.

I didn't need to take it out to clean it mind so who knows.

I just used a pair of pliers ;)
