Fabia Window Regulator

Featured Replies

While my GF was driving our Furby the electric front passenger window made a strange noise when closing it. She tried opening again and it just dropped into the door. No way of getting it out myself easily.

Reading up on that problem on Briskoda I realised that it might be tricky to fix myself and took it to the local dealer (Vindis Cambridge) this morning.

They secured the window in the closed position with a bit of cardbord and

told me they'd need to order a regulator. Sorted me out in 15 minutes in the morning and didn't even charge me anything. Brilliant so far.

I asked for a quote for the repair and the guy told me around 180

The regulator is around £70 inc the VAT and its a moulded plastic part that breaks (it retains the cable and links it to the window bracket).

Price sounds about right, about 1.5 hours labour due to them being fairly labour intensive to change.

Yes it is a pig of a job, especially if your reg is held on with the dreaded rivets ! better if it is bolted on like the early cars. They are not repairable, normally they are pretty trashed !

My passenger window's just suffered the same fate (but won't close all the way up, which is even more annoying as can't securely tape it shut now...)

Just wondering - is there a date when the rivets came in? My vRS was registed in April '04...

be glad you dont own a Renault, they only come complete, some are now

See if you can find a local independent.

Chap near me was a Skoda Master Mechanic and started up his own place, did the job while i waited, took 45 mins, charged me

Happened to me too, just as i was about to set off home from weekend camping, had to drill off rivets to get window up and taped up, has anyone got a tutorial to replace the regulator?

Don't order a regulator until you've checked inside. If you're lucky, it may be the carrier/clips which hold the window. You may be able to check without taking the panel off. There is a circular hole through which you should be able to see the carrier/glass/arm. To fix, you still have to take the panel off, so I'd suggest that if you have rivets that you drill out one at a time and put in a self-tapping screw, then move to the next. Only drill out the retaining rivets around the outside. The others further to the centre hold everything together. There is a lot on this site plus a great guide on the VW site. See also S' Vrs site.

This ALSO just happened to me, with a 2001 Fabia. Three days ago, the front nearside window made a series of ugly crunching sounds before dropping into the door.

Looks like this is becoming a fairly common problem.

I've just heard back from my local Skoda dealership (Parkview, Reading), who want

I had to drill them all out, in a rush before i set of home from a camping weekend. Window now gaffa taped up. I think it is the carrier clips as i could just see a white bit broken at the back edge, but couldnt get the metal panel out till i drilled out the rivets. I will have to see how much the bits are , then take it to my local specialist, as i cant be arsed to do it after spannering for 12 hours a day

Have a go yourself, im a tight git so thought id give it a go.

Hi, Got my regulator and just wondered what size the Skoda rivets are?

Can they be done with a hand tool using the right head or are they air gun only due to large size. They're bigger than any I have, can I use smaller as long as they cover the hole or will the carrier just slip around in this case?

Sorry about the bump but this seemed a much better place to ask rather than a new thread.

Taa, Rob.

They can be done using a small hand tool, but you need to choose the biggest rivets and/or a washer sold for the purpose. Why rivet them back? Self tappers can be used, but I found bolts of the right diameter to fit the holes (roofing bolts?) and cut them short. Means that you can get it off off again - and according to Sod's Law, means you're less likely to need to take it of than if you'd rivetted it.

Yeah, self tappers would work but worried about future issues with rust.

The bolt idea's interesting but don't they come loose over time, not having a proper nut on the opposite side?

Same happened to my 2002 esate, friend leaning out the window having a smoke and went to put the window up, just went up about one inch and dropped.

When turning the switch a second time it made a pretty nasty crunching noise too :thumbdwn:

Luckily got the job done soonish (I live near enough to Hull to warrant being worried about a window that was held up with masking tape . )

Top Banana I'd say:thumbup:

Our 2004 VRS has just suffered the same problem - I suppose I'm lucky that it's taken so long. The problem is the same as most people have reported - and I cant manually raise the window fully - it leaves a 2" gap - can someone please advise what I need to do to temporarily raise the window to close it - once I've done that I can fix it slow time as it's the passenger window. My wife needs the car for work and has to park it in public car parks and roads, as well as the risk outside our house - also it might rain - so I need to secure it quickly. Any advice would be much appreciated. Also any advice on the permenant fix would be appreciated - ie what do I need to replace and how,

Many thanks.

This happened to me a few weeks back. I took the the door trim off and there are 2 large black rubber grommets on the metal carrier iirc. I moved the window so icould see the brackets that hold the glass. Theres a bolt that needs undoing. Once the.bolt is undone the glass will move round freely

Thank you - I did this, this does release the glass - take care though as it it does release the glass - mine fell into the door. I still couldn't work out how to fix it, so I've popped the rivets. I've found the offending piece of plastic - Pathetic !

I've managed to refix the glass and prop it so it doesn't go down any more. I can now deal with the repair slow-time. How can I fully remove the panel? it seems as though not all the cables have connectors to break Also, what do I need to change to repair it? is it the inner panel, runner mechanism etc? it sounds as though the cables are messed up behind the panel. Also, what do I need to change - I guess that I cannot get the rogue plastic part.
