Battery or Alternator

Featured Replies

Hi There,

I wonder if anyone can help..I Have a Fabia 1.4 Classic 2000..Lately I've

noticed that even after a 40mile run the evening before, I have to jump

start it to get it started (incidently, I dont get any engine warning lights).Once the car is warmed up a little, I can leave it for 10 mins and it will start but any longer than that and I have to roll start it or jump it..Is it the Battery or the

Alternator:confused: Help Much Appreciated:)

I think that in this case your first suspect should be the battery.

Have you ever changed it?

They seem to last around 4-5 years. If yours hasn't been changed yet, it might be due.

I would check that before worrying about anything more serious - alternator, etc...

If it was the alternator, the car would most likely run out of electrical power (just die) while running and not after a night sitting. While driging you might notice a number of eloectrical anomalies as well - dimming lights, idiot lights, etc...

If the battery isn't old or tired, that's another story. Let us know.

Hi GlacierNR,

I don't think the battery has been changed, I bought it second hand, so it may be the battery.

The engine doesn't die whilst driving and there are no electrical anomalies but the battery doesn't seem to be holding a charge...I'll test it, see what the score

is and let you know....Thank you very much for the advice, its put my mind at rest a little......Cheers

Agree with other replies - most likely to be the battery yours if unchanged is about 5-6 years old they fail frequently at about 4-5 and normally show up their failings at the start of the winter months

Hi People,

You were right.. It was the battery..Now I have to remove it from that bloody "Darth Vader" cover contraption it's incased in. I know it's got a front panel I can remove coz I had to get involved with it once to replace a head lamp bulb...Oh well, many thanks yet again.. If I sus out a quick way of removing it, I'll let you know....Thanks Again

13mm bolt down in front of battery to undo the clamp plate holding the battery in place. Remove that and the clamp plate and the battery just lifts out :D

Chris

I am glad for you that its just the battery.
