Excel is doing my head in. Help!

Featured Replies

I don't know which smart f***** at MS decided to do implement this function as default

If you have a sheet open in Excel and you have a cell selected. If you go to the edge of the box so that the cursor changes from the "solitaire board" icon to the arrow and you then double click, it moves the view of the sheet way up or down or left or right, depending on which side of the cell you've double clicked. So you can end up several hundred of even thousand cells away from where you want to be :thumbdwn:

I've searched in the options and can't figure out how to turn it off. I know I should just be more precise in my clicking  but I'm having to work with massive sheets so need to view them at a low zoom factor which means cells are very small, say 6 or 7 pixels high.

How can you turn this off please. I've done a google but can't find much

Just like keeping shift held down too long when you hit down arrow and it takes you to row 65000 (and something) :D No idea on how to help though. I think its just one of those things. I tend to use the ctrl-letter keys when doing stuff like moving bits about, etc. I find having to click on the bottom right of the cell to copy the functions a bit of a pain.

Yeah, a few pet niggles.

I suppose I just have to change my way of working.

Oh and I did have fun and games getting two sheets/workbooks open up as two different instances of Excel (like Word does!) so I can have them side by side. Fortunately, I overcame Excel's resistance to that one :D

Am trying to replicate the fault for you and work out how to solve it for you, but my Excel doesnt behave as you are describing when I carry out the same action

Sorry!

If your double clicking to edit the formulas press f2 instead ;)

Ah! Bloody handy that. Nice tip.

Which version of Excel are you using? Doesn't seem to be a "feature" of 2003+SP1?

Chris

Chris.. select cell D10 or similar on an empty worksheet.. double click on the left or top border of the cell while it is a crosshair and the selected cell will become either the topmost cell/leftmost cell. It wont work on the right and bottom border unless there is data below.

Aha! Thanks for clearing that up Leon :D That's a pretty funky feature actually

Chris

Do it holding shift and it will select em ;)
