Help! Fabia VRS clutch replacement

Featured Replies

Guys and girls,

The clutch on my fabia vrs has started to slip after 35k miles. I've been remapped for over 20k so no suprise, but I was suprised when I phoned the dealer when he said it would cost me

surely thats gotta be wrong! £1500 for a clutch?!? jeez, if that's the case, I hope mine doesn't go, 57k of learners, and it's still fine, but I don't want to be paying £1500 !!

If you remove the "Map" will it still slip.....Less power. If your selling I'd Remove the map and hope for the best

Why do you want a dealer to do it? Get a VAG specialist to change it, might be cheaper.

If you going to advertise your car here people know now the clutch is going, so it might be worth getting it changed.

Try one of the site sponsors. They will be able to get you something a bit better suited to the remap for less than your first quote.

Jabba jumps to mind, but they're all good and will probably give you a much more honest opinion on the condition of your dual mass when they get in there.

Depending on how you drive it can cause damage to the DMF, eg booting it from low revs. I'd ring a couple more dealers/VAG specialists and see what the consensus is. As A.G said, if you're selling it, you might be better just leaving it ;)

Chris

i think 1500 is steep for a clutch change. i know were talking different kettles and different fish here but when i changed the clutch of my 2.0 the sachs clutch kit cost me £92 trade price, and i also acidently buggered one of my cv joints cos it was jammed in the hub, that was £40? iirc and the rest is labour, autodata says 6.5hours iirc, most specialist charge about 40 per hour, and that only comes to 392 squids. then allow yourself a few extra quids for the inevitable breakages of the driveshaft bolts.....

in you situation i would go to a good independant or a VAG specialist

1500 quid is BS - FAR too expensive, although at a main dealer I reckon you'd probably get there with the labour involved if the DMF needs changing.

I paid about 2 grand for my LSD + uprated pressure plate + organic clutch, something like that anyway (cant find the receipt & it's a while ago now).

The labour is definitely the killer element here, clutch isn't all that expensive in fairness.

If you're keeping the car it might be worth doing the whole lot in one go, that's entirely up to you & your budget though.

Try a specialist as already stated. JKM in Portsmouth are always fair to me when I visit them.

Taking the map off will almost certainly help the clutch to survive a little longer too.

Geez.....a uprated organic clutch from JabbaSport set me back about £700.00 quid or so.....£1500.00 sounds very steep. Although that did not include a DMF.

Think the damaged DMF is one of the reason's some tuners recommend a Helix clutch and single mass flywheel kit. Still works out cheaper than

*IS* the clutch proper fooked tho... eg slipping all the time?

my clutch started slipping the day after it was mapped... that was 60k miles ago.. it comes and goes, usually in damp cold weather, but a bit of a "de-glazing" always fixes it :D

Mines just started slipping at the 32k mark. BUGGER. But like NeoVR it comes and goes with damp weather. With the re-map un-plugged the clutch works fine so going back to standard 130hp this evening to prolong my clutch life while I work out if I'm gonna sell it or not.....

37k on remapped OEM clutch and it's perfect. Jeez, how are you guys driving your cars...

Like Col says. I bit of de-glaxing helps. swmbo was wondering wtf I was doing once on the way home.

I have not only changed my clutch, but also the pressure plate which goes on the end of the flywheel. The pressure plate costs twice as much as the clutch itself.

I went for a Sachs one, and I have no slippage whatsoever, and clutch feel is still fine.

I paid about £700 all in fitted at IP. I went with them as they were the cheapest quote for fitting (£160   ). The rest was just the parts, so you can see from that that £1500 for just an OEM clutch fitted is far too much...

Don't underestimate the work though, it's a "gearbox out of the engine bay job and nearly an entire engine out. Takes 3 hours plus...

HTH :)

edit: all the details in the original post here

Xavier do you suffer from any DMF vibrations with your setup when at low revs?

Just a bit if and only if I boot it at around 1400-1500rpm in a low gear, for instance fourth when coming out of a roundabout at about 30mph. Don't get it in any of the top 3 gears and very little in fourth. More noticeable in fifth and sixth, but I generally shift down a notch or two :)

Thanks for all of the help on this guys... tbh, I may just be worrying a little too much because of the fact that the clutch has only just started to slip after 20k of remap. It sounds like I am one of the lucky ones here as it is!

Col - I am wondering whether you may have hit the nail on the head with your suggestion. I do treat the clutch pretty well and spending a fair bit of my time on A roads and motorways, the clutch doesn't get too much abuse. I think I'll see how it goes over the next few weeks. The map is coming off my car on the 9th December so all being well (and my right foot being sensible!), it should last until then.

Again, thanks for the help guys - one of the reasons this forum is so great!

Do we have the cost for how much a replacement DMF is? Might help work out where the bulk of the £1500 is going! Into the dealer's drinking fund by the sounds of it ;)
