Short Arms, Deep pockets OEM headunit removal

Featured Replies

Parts required:

One length of 5/32inch Aluminium tubing.

One junior hacksaw

One hammer or press

Result: Radio removal tool for approx 50p

I was struggling to remove the standard headunit from my Fabia vRS at the weekend as I did not have the proper VAG tool. I went to Halfords to enquire about the price of the Auto Electronics removal tool and I almost passed out at the price as I was only ever going to use it once. I decided to chance having something at home to do the job. I found some 5/32" diameter aluminium tubing that I had purchased earlier on in the year from a model shop for the pricely sum of 52 pence. I pressed the end flat so to fit the hole for removal and hey presto! the unit detatched from the dash allowing me to pull the headunit free. :P

 Good effort.

I did the same, I almost laughed at the guy in halfords. I got some old jigsaw blades and filed the teeth off with the bench grinder. They did the job perfectly...

Genious!

A chopped up credit card does the same thing for free ;)

And will do alot more in long run for your bank balance!!!!!

Nesessity is certainly the mother of invention. I found that the tweezers on my Victorinox pocket knife had just enough lenght and spring in them to release the catches for me.

On one of the tiny keyring size swiss army knives the nail file does the job too

screwfix (I think!) do a kit for about £4, includes key for most OEM stereo's (VAG, Merc, BMW, Toyota, Nissan I think - never came accross a car I couldn't get the stereo out from and I'm not a tea-leaf!)
