What causes this?

Featured Replies

The following comments relate to when my car is warmed up, stationary, and at idle. I have noticed that sometimes the flow of gas from the exhaust is much stronger than other times. Does anybody know why this happens? (55 plate fabia vRS).

Like lumpy idling?

No it's stranger than that. If the car has been sitting at idle for a couple of mins the flow of gasses from the exhaust will suddenly increase. There is a faint whistle too - maybe the turbo spooling up:confused: .

Well if it's at idle, that'd be the turbo winding down. If you feel it's a problem then go and get it checked, but from what you've discribed doesn't sound a problem.

Its more like the turbo spooling up than down- hence the increase in gas flow. I don't see it as a problem-just weird. Maybe its the ecu trying to keep the cat clear or something?

Doesn't the Exhaust Gas Recirculation cut in/out after a couple of minutes idling? That's what I assumed it was when mine does it.

I also noticed it but it was like that from new so i dont think thats a problem. It's most noticeable when it was driven hard and then idling.

Apparently, yes. EGR is most evident at idle, but it cuts out after 2 min idling for some reason (to prevent soot build up?). Read this on Fred's TDI Page. TDIClub.com. VW TDI Enthusiast Community, which is a great place for TDi knowledge.
