Are my brakes due for a change

Featured Replies

Had my current setup for 30K miles now. Their performance is not what they once was. the initial bite is no longer there and you have to use more pedal power to get the performance.

Looking at the discs their doesnt seem to be much of a lip. Whats the min depth of the disc can be? Also looking at the pads their seems to be a good 1cm left. the fluid was last changed about 10K miles ago. But as its not being "used ;)" much this past year I've not bothered to changing it yet. At the last service the dealer seemed to think their was over 50% left in them. (assume he means pads)

Cheers

Perhaps they are still the same but have now got used to them. The pads should work just the same from new untill you hit the backing plate on the disk. I would expect a lip to form on the disk quiet quickly but as the pad contact is still the same efficeny shouldnt be affected.

Could the pads have become glazed? Try doing a few hard stops from motorway speeds (obviously making sure it's a safe place to do it). If that doesn't improve things gets the fluid bled or preferably replaced before thinking of changing pads or discs.

Fluid change is sounds like a plan. (goes off to re-read eddy's thread;) )

As for the pads being glazed. Is their anyway of knowing this or is it just a case of doing a few hard stops and seeing if it helps.

I had to replace all the pads on my vRS at 33,000 miles, so not far off your mileage.... JBS assured me the disks would be good for two sets of pads, and they have been... still working well at 58k (as the people at the Keswick meet will testify ) ;)

There was a terrible smell of scorched rubber coming off your car. You must have been giving it some pasty up that hill!! No wonder your pads are creamed!!!;)

I've just had to replace the front pads on my Fabia VRS , i only took a cursory glance at them whilst i was swapping the wheels over so my sticky Toyos are on the front for the track day tomorrow , N/S looked ok but O/S looked dodgy , on closer inspection , all of the friction material on the inner pad had broken up and was no longer attached to backing plate  the N/S was the same as well   don't know how long they've been like that as i've never touched them , obviously they got a bit warm when i was at the Nurburgring in August , but i never noticed any deterioration in brake performance or any odd noises , they have done 37k miles and i'm not heavy on the brakes , anyway fitted new pads and i must say the brakes do seem better , i'll kill them pads tomorrow at Oulton Park:D

i would post the piccys i've just took of them if i knew how to , doh

well i've just got back from the track day at Oulton Park , i've totally smoked the new pads , quite literally  cracking good fun as well , the Fabia holds its own even without a remap against some quicker cars :D

37k ... similar mileage again... and mine wore on the inside pad... the outside looked fine :)

and Chris: yes I could smell it, lol..... I never worry about things like that unless I detect a loss of performance

Inside pad is where the piston is so has more force excerted on it.
