Whining in the morning

Featured Replies

UPDATE: Thought the problem was reslolved... see last posts. Almost every morning when I start my car it makes a whining sound. I have described it here before as a hydralic sound - sort of like a hydraulic pump that is drawing from an empty reservoir. Anyway, I had the car into the dealers and they changed the pas pump and a number of other odds and ends. The dealer and I thought that this would cure the problem because it appeared that the sound was coming from the pump. I also had a pas failure and other sounds related to the pump.

However, the sound persisted. Last week they changed the cam belt tensioner and oiled any moving parts in the motor that could possibly make any strange sound. This has been to no avail as the sound is still there. I just got off the phone again with the dealer and they are looking into anything else they may have overlooked, but they are scratching their heads too.

Any clues? Anybody... :) 2006 Fabia 16v 4200km

is the sound related to the speed on the engine or the speed of the car when moving??

it does this when sitting. It goes either waiting for about 20 or 30 seconds or once i start to move the car - whichever comes first.

btw, what kind of oil pump does the furby have?

Not some silly like the fanbelt needing a tiny bit more tension is it? the can whine a bit when first starting up particularly int he cold or damp. Although I would have thought that sort of thing would have been done by now?

depends on which engine....

the 1.4 mpi/2.0/1.9 diesel has a chain driven pump

the 1.4 16v has a duocentric direct drive pump driven off the end of the crankshaft..... i have seen these wear out the rotors and get niosey before, but it's really rare, unless your oil is filthy and never gets changed

Well, at 4000kms the oil pump shouldn't be worn out. What kind of sound does it make worn out?

It has to be something else though that the dealer hasn't thought to look at. Either that or the new pas pump is a dud. However, that said, last I talked to them they were sure that the sound was coming from the rh side (your driver side) of the car.

btw, they checked all belts and it isn't that either.... It is more of a whine rather than a screach.

gear box oil level been checked?

All fluid levels are good. :/

but the noise goes with a short time or when you start moving?

Do you start your car with your foot on the clutch? if you dont try starting your car and seeing if the noise goes when you press the clutch down.

If you do start your car with the clutch pressed, try starting it without your foot on the pedal then pumping it a few times.

The car's starter is safety interlinked with the clutch so it won't start without the clutch pressed. :/

Conjecture: Supposing the dealer might not have localized the sound exactly... What are the possibilities that it still is the pas pump? I mean, could it be some other defect somewhere in the pas system that causes the pump problems? Rack defect or something like that?

Well, I finally get my car back tomorrow. The whining sound was isolated to the oil pump. So they are bringing in a new pump from Bogota today to install. The dealer is confident that this isthe source of the whining sound. I am, as you would say there, well chuffed.

i assume you have a 1.4 16v fabia by your profile?? normally these engine only damage the oil pump when the drive spigot/slot on the end of the crankshaft is worn down, in which case it would mean a new engine.... but if all is being fixed then it sounds like you've got away with it lightly

Yes, 1.4 16. It sounds like I got away lightly as you say - at least I hope so.

Tom, is there anything else I should be concerned about given the part they are replacing?

Funny it would be worn so early in life though, hey?!

not really, but it might be worth getting them to fit a new timing belt kit at the same time too seeing as it's all got to come off anyway to get the oil pump off, the only other thing is that they may have to take teh sump off too because it's quite difficult to linie up the oil pump with the sump still in place..

Well, I got the car back half an hour ago... They changed the oil pump and that DIDN'T fix the problem. Same noise still there and they aer able to reproduce it by not running the motor for long: start, run for 15 seconds and shut off, repeat... The sound disappears when the rpms are increased.

On Tuesday they will probably be bringing in an engineer from Bogota to look into the problem as the dealer and shop have reached their collective wits end.

Who knows what's next. If the problem can't be resolved, what's the right thing to do?

Any more clues or help would be appreciated.

Btw, the car has just over 3000 miles (4200km). Has been in the garage 6 weeks out of its first 5 months. :/
