Pics of the Moon

Featured Replies

Been playing around with my new Sony DSC-H5 camera again tonight.

Just took a quick couple of pics of the moon tonight from my back garden.

Didn't use a tripod and took some with the digital zoom too.

I am very happy with how they have come out considering the camera was hand held. I think the image stabilizer must have been helping out here.

See what you think

excellent pictures all things considered, had worse using wet film on a tripod afetr setting up for 10 mins :o

I nearly had a go this morning, but went to bed instead. The moon looked good

against the housing outline.

Good evening/night for photography last night - this is now my desktop background.

If it wasn't so flipping cold I'd take the telescope outside now and have a squint at the moon (yeah I know old and lazy :( )

That is fantastic

Did you do anything special to get that pic?? Tripod etc???

What sort of settings ie apperture, shutter and iso did you use?

That

Special arrangements included standing on my picnic table and holding the camera up high.

Set on auto - no special settings. I zoomed in to a bit of tree and the sky behind because there are houses that won't go away unless I do.

Here it is without the zoom.

I do have the sharpness permanently shifted in one direction after a review I read of the camera, but I can't remember which way :o:D

I've never tried setting white balance - not sure how I would know which way to adjust it?

The kit pays for itself mostly. GTMedia Services UK

Progressed from a hobby over the years - built up enough kit to buy 2 vrs's :o

Please please don't tell the better half ........

haha cool! Gonna say it's a bit much to pay for a camera just for hobby useage! lol!! Would like a posh one like that! :D:thumbup:

OMFG!!! I'm speechless - that is amazing

I remembered taking a pic of the moon sometime, just found it. It was back in July at sunset, handheld, so not too hot!

Here it is anyway, and I'll get out the tripod and have another go soon.

Looks clear outside at the moment so fingers crossed...

The secret of taking pics of the moon (apart from using a pretty long zoom lens) is to appreciate how bright it is. Most cameras, even with clever metering, will overexpose the moon as a bright white disk. It actually doesn't require the slowest shutter speeds - although the combo of the long lens and a slightly slower shutter speed make a tripod fairly necessary. So you really need a manual setting on your camera and experiment with the exposure to get it right, or perhaps use a spot metering mode if you have one.

it is a small world, I took some a while ago too
